Introducing Vox Media Studios

A premium programming division for television, podcasts, and film

Today, Vox Media announces the creation of Vox Media Studios, the company’s fast-growing entertainment unit that creates and distributes premium programming by bringing the most innovative talent inside and outside Vox Media to television, podcasts and film.

Vox Media Studios encompasses the Entertainment and Production division that was formerly called Vox Entertainment, the Vox Media Podcast Network, and the Epic team, who joined Vox Media today. Together, these three entities produce, develop, and sell original programming — both independently and in collaboration with Vox Media’s category-leading editorial networks — to extend the company’s storytelling to all relevant modern platforms.

Vox Media Studios will be run by Marty Moe, who takes on the new role of President of Vox Media Studios. Moe has been at Vox Media for nearly a decade, during which time he has led revenue, strategy and operations for the company, co-founded both The Verge and Polygon, launched the Vox Media Podcast Network, and built out Vox Media’s studio business. Prior to joining Vox Media, Moe held senior positions at AOL, the U.S. Treasury Department and Skadden Arps.

“Marty has helped to lead our company and grow it to prominence by consistently opening new pathways for quality storytelling, reaching modern audiences, and developing new business models,” said Jim Bankoff, Chairman & CEO of Vox Media. “In a few short years, we’ve already established a stellar reputation for producing highly successful programming and partnering with best in class talent and distribution partners. And we’re just getting started.”

“Vox Media Studios is successful because it is completely aligned with what our company has always done so well — produce compelling stories for modern, curious audiences,” said Marty Moe, President of Vox Media Studios. “By collaborating with the immensely talented teams in the Vox Media editorial networks as well as the most innovative creators outside our company, we have built a unique advantage in delivering for audiences and the platforms that serve them.”

Vox Media Studios: Entertainment & Production

The ambitious full-service division develops, produces and distributes premium, non-fiction programming for TV and OTT platforms. Based in Los Angeles and New York, the growing team is dedicated to great storytelling, next-generation talent, and a deep curiosity about the world. The division is led by Chad Mumm, Head of Entertainment, and Mark W. Olsen, Head of Production.

In the first few months of 2019, the division was proud to renew Vox’s Explained, a docu-series on Netflix with production led by showrunner Claire Gordon and Vox’s Joe Posner and Ezra Klein; and No Passport Required, a food and travel docu-series hosted by Marcus Samuelsson and co-created by Eater for PBS, led by showrunner Joanna Forscher and Eater’s Amanda Kludt, Sonia Chopra, and Maureen Giannone Fitzgerald. The Studios team is also behind projects including American Style, a CNN Original; Consider It hosted by Liz Plank on Facebook Watch; and a forthcoming series on YouTube Originals from Vox.

Vox Media Podcast Network

The Vox Media Podcast Network is one of the largest and fastest-growing collections of high-quality podcasts. With more than 100 active shows from Vox Media’s editorial networks and beyond, there is a show to feed every passion — from daily news and policy, to tech and business, to culture and sports. The Vox Media Podcast Network is led by Nishat Kurwa, Executive Producer, and Evan Lang, Head of Revenue.

This business tripled its portfolio of shows from 2017 to 2018, and continues its rapid growth. The slate includes shows from every Vox Media editorial newsroom — as well as many from talented voices beyond our walls.

Our category-leading shows come from editorial leaders including Recode’s co-founder and editor-at-large Kara Swisher (Recode Decode and Pivot) and executive editor Peter Kafka (Recode Media); Vox’s Ezra Klein (The Ezra Klein Show ), co-founder and senior correspondent Matt Yglesias, and senior correspondent Sarah Kliff (The Weeds); The Verge’s co-founder and editor-in-chief Nilay Patel (The Vergecast); Eater’s editor-in-chief Amanda Kludt (The Eater Upsell); SB Nation’s interim editor-in-chief Ryan Nanni and executive editor Spencer Hall (Shutdown Fullcast).

On its first anniversary, we renewed our partnership with Stitcher to continue Today, Explained hosted by Sean Rameswaram and produce a thrice-weekly technology news show from Recode launching later this year. We also recently acquired music podcast Switched on Pop on Vox, and the SB Nation team brands continue to expand the industry’s leading network of team-focused podcasts.

Epic

The newest arm of Vox Media Studios is Epic, which includes Epic Magazine, the nonfiction storytelling powerhouse, and its sister company Epic Digital, the true story consultancy and content studio for leading brands. Through this exciting acquisition, Epic brings its Academy Award-winning and New York Times bestselling nonfiction storytelling capabilities to Vox Media’s audiences and advertising partners. Epic is led by co-founders Joshuah Bearman and Josh Davis and is based in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The Epic team is behind such films as Argo and the upcoming Apple series, Little America, and works closely with large film studios such as 21st Century Fox and MGM, and brands such as Google, Ford, and IBM.
