Certificates of Advanced Study
To help students broaden their expertise in targeted fields, Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies offers Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) programs. These targeted elective offerings can be taken to supplement a master’s degree program and can help students develop specialized, in-demand skills.
The iSchool offers the following four CAS programs.
Certificate of Advanced Study in Data Science
The CAS in Data Science is a 15-credit, graduate-level certificate that equips students with a mixture of technical and theoretical skills in the field of data science.
Curriculum for the CAS in Data Science can be tailored to fit each student’s career goals. Areas of study include:
- Data analytics
- Data storage and management
- Data visualization
- General systems management

Certificate of Advanced Study in Information Security Management
The CAS in Information Security Management (ISM) is a 15-credit graduate-level certificate that offers coursework in information security technology, policy, risk management, and evaluation.
ISM students learn to:
- Promote a high degree of complex technical security
- Manage increased operational costs
- Navigate diverse policies
- Monitor and respond to user behavior
The National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have jointly designated Syracuse University as a National Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense, Information Assurance Education, and in Research.1

Certificate of Advanced Study in Enterprise Technology Leadership
The CAS in Enterprise Technology Leadership (ETL) is a 15-credit, graduate-level certificate featuring an interdisciplinary curriculum designed by the School of Information Studies and the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. The ETL certificate fits the needs of working professionals in a variety of fields who are working toward or aspire to be in technology leadership roles. The ETL certificate is also designed to assist companies in cultivating technology leadership within their organization.

Certificate of Advanced Study in School Media
The CAS in School Media is a 21-credit certificate program for those who already possess an accredited master's degree in library and information science and want certification as a school library media specialist.
Students must first undergo a thorough review of their graduate library science degree transcript to determine if the core graduate and undergraduate course requirements have been fulfilled. If all requirements have not been met, additional courses will be required.
