Sharing information with social media sites

Page updated: 22 July 2019

If you have a BBC account we might use information we hold about you to tailor sponsored BBC recommendations on social media sites, like Facebook, Google, Snapchat or Twitter. For example, we might not show sponsored posts about a show you’ve already watched.

To personalise our recommendations, we securely match encrypted email addresses via our third party processor, Salesforce. The social media site can only see an email address if it’s already used for an account on their site. We don’t provide any new data on BBC users.

Controlling your data

If you don’t want your data transferred to the social media sites you already use, you can change your settings. Go to the settings tab in your account, and go to the privacy and cookies section. Then turn off ‘Allow tailored social media recommendations’. You might still see BBC posts, but they won’t be personalised using your BBC account data.

(You can also change the settings in the social media site, to control what kinds of promoted posts you see on that site.)
