When Kazakhstan gained Independence in 1991 it confronted the twin challenge of developing both a foreign policy and diplomatic corps from scratch. Unlike other newly independent countries, which have tended to be preoccupied mostly with domestic affairs initially, Kazakhstan embraced an active and engaged foreign policy early on.
This report briefly reviews Kazakhstan’s foreign policy, strategic partnerships, and participation in international organisations, focusing particularly on the UN, OSCE, CICA, IAEA, SCO, NATO, and CSTO. It also touches upon Kazakhstan’s contribution to a stable Afghanistan and the regional neighbourhood. It concludes by outlining the challenges ahead and how Kazakhstan’s new, modernised, foreign policy intends to address them.
