Expanded access to JSTOR and Artstor extended through June 2021

As the COVID-19 crisis continues to disrupt higher education, ITHAKA is extending the JSTOR and Artstor expanded access program through June 30, 2021 to help institutions in their shift to remote teaching.

Institutions that have opted in don’t need to take any action — they will continue receiving access to unlicensed JSTOR Archive and Primary Source collections and the Artstor Digital Library. Participating institutions that have not yet opted in may still do so; please log in to… Read more»

New: white paper on digitization of Arabic-language materials

In 2017, JSTOR received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to study processes for digitizing Arabic-language scholarly content. Our goal was to develop a workflow for scanning Arabic journals that is cost-efficient, feasible to implement at scale, and able to produce high-quality images, metadata, and fully searchable text.

68,000 additional free articles added to Early Journal Content

In September 2011, JSTOR introduced Early Journal Content, 500,000 publicly available articles published in the United States before 1924 and before 1876 in other countries. Following the initial release, as we added journals to JSTOR with issues from that time period, we included the eligible content in EJC, and over time it grew to 595,000 articles.

JSTOR makes its Research Basics course easier to access

JSTOR has made its popular Research Basics course easier and simpler to access. Research Basics, a free and open online course designed to help early college and college-bound students learn academic research skills, was originally available as a Moodle course that required registration; it has now been moved to the LibGuides platform and the registration requirement removed.

Changing the way we talk about metadata

You’ve probably heard that metadata is “data about data.” But that definition grates on Jabin White, ITHAKA’s vice president of content management. While correct, he says that explanation often calls for another.

197 Turkish institutions join JSTOR

JSTOR and the Turkish Academic Network and Information Center (ULAKBIM EKUAL) have announced a historic 3-year national agreement. In this arrangement, JSTOR will provide full access to 2,500+ journals and 2,100+ research reports on the JSTOR platform to 197 Turkish higher education and research institutions.

Text Analyzer, the tool that allows you to use your own documents to search for articles and books in JSTOR, is now capable of analyzing content in Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish.

JSTOR joins Crossref Ambassadors

JSTOR has long participated as a Crossref affiliate, and now our digital content manager Lauren Lissaris has expanded that relationship by becoming a Crossref Ambassador. Crossref advocates persistent cross-publisher citation linking using Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) in online academic journals, and its new Crossref Ambassadors program brings together volunteers from the international scholarly research community to improve scholarly communication and promote Crossref’s role in those efforts. Scientific American now available in JSTOR

JSTOR now offers the complete run of Scientific American from 1845 to 2012, with new content to be added each year. Scientific American is included in the JSTOR Life Sciences collection, where it joins more than 150 other esteemed publications. The addition of Scientific American expands JSTOR’s coverage of a broad range of scientific fields, and will additionally benefit interdisciplinary researchers working across the humanities and social sciences. JSTOR and AAAS further expand access to Science

JSTOR and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) are pleased to announce they have renewed their longstanding agreement to preserve and make available over 100 years of Science via the JSTOR platform. JSTOR and AAAS first began working together in 1998 when Science was among the earliest journals converted from print to digital form by JSTOR. For nearly 20 years, JSTOR has hosted issues of Science dating back to 1880 – more than 480,000 pages of content in total, covering everything from electricity to genomics. JSTOR makes the journal available through several of its collections to libraries around the world, where it can be used by students and researchers working across a wide array of disciplines. With this new agreement, JSTOR and the AAAS renew their commitment to ensuring access to this long history of scientific research and to continuing to add new issues of Science to JSTOR each year. JSTOR receives $50,000 NEH grant

Today, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) announced funding for 208 humanities projects, including a $50,000 grant to JSTOR to support research on the high-quality digitization and digital preservation of Arabic-language scholarly journals.

JSTOR’s NEH-funded research will include the development of digitization and indexing guidelines for Arabic-language scholarly journals in the humanities and social sciences, the digitization of a small test run of Arabic-language scholarly journal issues, and an assessment of the cost, quality, and feasibility of the digitization… Read more»
