On April 30, 2019, Alexa Smith, waits on a stretcher with her friends and family outside a hospital in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, after breaking her leg running ...from a man who tried to assault her.

While Alexa had been planning on migrating to Mexico, she won't be able to as a result of her injury and inability to walk. "I would seek to be more free," said Alexa of her desire to live in Mexico.

Published in National Geographic, this story is part of a project looking at the impact of migration on women worldwide by eight photographers from The Everyday Projects.

Explore all the stories from Somalia and Singapore to Pakistan and Honduras by Amrita Chandradas, Kuleshova Ksenia, Miora Rajaonary, Mridula Amin, Nichole Sobecki, Saiyna B Hidayatullah, and Thana Faroq! You can read them all here: https://on.natgeo.com/2M8GkeX
