In January 2021, Honkajoki municipality was absorbed by Kankaanpää. Furthermore, five municipalities changed the region: Heinävesi moved to Pohjois-Karjala, Iitti to Päijät-Häme, Isokyrö to Etelä-Pohjanmaa, Joroinen to Pohjois-Savo, and Kuhmoinen to Pirkanmaa.

According to the 2019 definition of urban settlements, three places are listed for the first time (Lemströms kanal, Niemelä-Petäjäaho and Pieni-Hirvanen), four settlements are re-entries, six settlements are absorbed by other urban areas, and nine places fulfill the criteria for urban settlements no longer.

The North Karelian municipality of Valtimo was merged with Nurmes municipality.

According to the 2018 definition of settlements, Koskö was separated from Vaasa. There are six mergers: Lapijoki joined Eurajoki, Reijola joined Joensuu, Visulahti joined Mikkeli, Karvoskylä-Jokikylä joined Oksava, Harviala joined Hämeenlinna and Puuppola joined Jyväskylä. 8 settlements dropped under the threshold of 200 inhabitants.
