Mechanical digger breaks wall of Bab al-Aziziya compound

Bulldozers and mechanical diggers have begun to demolish the Bab al-Aziziya compound in the Libyan capital, Tripoli - famous as the fortress-like headquarters of toppled leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Officials with the National Transitional Council say the area will become a public park. While occupied by Col Gaddafi, the compound was shrouded in secrecy and feared by many Libyans.

The compound is still guarded to keep away Gaddafi loyalists. Only a few days ago a gun battle broke out in the city between pro and anti-Gaddafi forces.

The compound came to symbolise Col Gaddafi's rule and was taken by rebel forces when they attacked the capital in August.

Before its fall, the compound was the target of repeated Nato air strikes. Government officials allowed cameras in to film pro-Gaddafi supporters amid the debris.
