Applications for Fall 2022 Will Open Soon !

Deadline: March 1st (International) / April 1st (Domestic)

The Master of Science in Environmental Metrology & Policy (EMAP) at Georgetown University is a top-notch interdisciplinary graduate program on applying best available sciences to environmental policymaking for chemical pollutions prevention and management. Its integrated experiential-learning curriculum provides a unique combination of broad expertise and marketable skills to scientists and engineers, as well as people of diverse educational backgrounds, who are inspired and motivated by a higher calling for protecting and saving the Planet Earth. As such, learning and training with EMAP will enable its graduates to carve out impactful careers in leading environmental research and policymaking at all levels of government, industry, and other organizations for prevention and management of aggravating chemical pollutions in US and world. In other word, EMAP graduates will be well-equipped to channel their passion in and maximize their societal impact through protecting environment from chemical pollutions. Jointly with the Department of Chemistry at Georgetown University, EMAP also offers an EMAP MS–CHEM PhD dual degree program.

Specifically, integrated metrology and policymaking core courses offer students a sequential curriculum structure to pursue long-term guided independent research on contemporary environmental topics concerning chemical pollutions. Students’ working knowledge is further enriched through electives in economics, government, ethics, and environmental data science. Moreover, with access to dedicated state-of-the-art metrology instruments and a 10-week program-funded summer internship at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), EMAP students hone well their technical proficiency by working with leading scientists and policy makers.

Leveraging all the Washington, D.C. region has to offer, EMAP’s integrated research-oriented professional training combines science and policymaking to uniquely prepare students to make a difference in growing interdisciplinary fields of protecting environment from aggravating chemical pollutions. Particularly, students in this highly ranked program of great time flexibility benefit from world-class instructors from Georgetown, NIST and EPA. Students will learn from them the science of identifying and quantifying chemical pollutants in environment and assessing their environmental and health risks by combining epidemiological, occupational, clinical, animal, in vivo, in vitro, and in silico data to estimate human and ecological responses to pollutant exposures. Students will also become familiar with the current laws that govern environmental protection in the United States and other countries, and when, how, and why these laws were enacted. Consequently, students will gain a deeper appreciation of the complex process by which environmental decisions are made and the efficacy of past decisions through an evaluation of real-world case studies. Furthemore, all lecture courses are scheduled after 4pm on weekdays and lab courses on Saturdays so students can have the option of pursuing the degree while still working full or part time.

“The academic expectation that you are at Georgetown, that you are going to make difference, you are doing something important, that feels really good”, Hannah B. Hidle, EMAP class of 2021.
