Swiss Confederation
In 2020, the municipalities Thurnen (in Bern canton), Villaz, Prez (both in Fribourg canton) and Verzasca (in Ticino) were created by mergers. Two municipalities lost areas to Verzasca. Five municipalities were absorbed by other municipalities.

According to the definite end-of-2019 population estimates, 17.9% of the population of Switzerland is 65 or older and 0.96% (=82,879) is 90 or older. 74.7% of the inhabitants have the Swiss citizenship and 69.9% are born in Switzerland.

Following mergers happened in 2019: Oberstammheim, Unterstammheim and Waltalingen formed Stammheim commune; Wädenswil incorporated Hütten and Schönenberg; Hinterrhein, Nufenen and Splügen fused to Rheinwald commune; Attelwil is now part of Reitnau; Rebeuvelier and Vellerat were absorbed by Courrendlin; Golaten (formerly in Bern-Mittelland) belongs now as part of Kallnach to Verwaltungskreis Seeland.

The preliminary end-of-2018 population of Switzerland reached 8.542 million and 11 mergers reduced the number of communes to 2,222. The districts of Neuchâtel canton were eliminated on 1 January 2018.
