Marlow works for an ivory-trading company in the heart of West Africa. His job is to collect the ivory gathered by the company's agents and transport it down-river. Along the way he witnesses brutality and senses hatred between the native African people and their colonizers. One of the agents is Kurtz, a zealous European whose job it is to collect ivory. But Marlow is shocked when he sees what Kurtz and the other white traders have done to the local inhabitants. Joseph Conrad's story explores the dark potential in all human hearts and the depths of depravity of which all are capable.
