U.S. President Barack Obama will land in Kenya with a mission to strengthen U.S. security and economic ties, but his personal connection to his father's birthplace will dominate a trip that Kenyans view as a native son returning home.

Obama’s ancestral village of Kogelo is home to his step-grandmother Sarah Hussein Obama as well as burial place of his father. While in Kenya Obama will spend private time with family members but will not travel to the village that is most closely associated with the family name, White House officials said.

While the continent will welcome Obama, many Africans had expected closer attention from a man they claim as their own. That sentiment is felt acutely in the village of Kogelo.

"We thought the American government could at least bring some assistance to the area," said Stephen Okumu Obewa, a teacher who works at Senator Barack Obama Primary School, named before Obama reached the White House.

"Maybe he is interested somehow but we are not aware," he said in a scruffy school with many broken chairs and desks.

Obama wrote about a visit to Kogelo in his 1995 book "Dreams from My Father", which helped launch his swift political ascent.

Some of the fame rubbed off on the village. Tourists turned up and visitors often knock on the door of Mama Sarah, as Obama's step-grandmother is known.

Critics of Obama have compared his record in Africa unfavourably to that of his predecessor, George W. Bush and his President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief programme.

Obama's advisers point to his own initiatives on electricity, agriculture, and trade as solidifying his legacy.

He is the first sitting U.S. president to go to Kenya or Ethiopia, his second stop on the two-country tour.

Obama will give a speech in Nairobi to the Kenyan people, which is likely to highlight his personal connection to the country. As well as the final resting place of his father, a Kenyan government economist who died in 1982, the ancestral village holds the grave of the President’s grandfather.

"Just as anybody is curious about their heritage, visiting Kenya provides him an opportunity to make that personal connection," said Valerie Jarrett, a senior aide and family friend of Obama.
