== Account creation strangeness ==

Dear Tim,

something strange has happened when creating my account. As there appears to be no "village pump" or similar on this wiki, I thought I'd ask you as your contributions according to [[Special:RecentChanges]] appear to indicate you may be the right person to address regarding account creation matters (if not, please tell me where to ask or whether I should file a bug report).

# Years ago, in the svn days, I had an svn account named "grafzahl". Now I wanted to create myself a new account here.
# I chose the user name "GrafZahl" (with capital Z, like on the other wikis) and "grafzahl" as shell account name. I tried this twice, both times getting an error message (not allowed to change external account).
# First I thought maybe my old svn account was migrated and tried to request a new password, but the user name "GrafZahl" did not exist. So then I thought, maybe the shell name "grafzahl" was locked because it was once used during the svn times by me.
# So I tried again with shell account name "gz" instead of "grafzahl", and presto! it worked, '''but''': according to my preferences, my user name is now "Grafzahl" (with lower case z), and my shell account name is my old "grafzahl" instead of "gz". ''What has happened here?''

In any case, it's probably good I have my old shell account name back. It would be nice if my user name could be changed to "GrafZahl" (with a capital Z) to be in line with my other wiki accounts, though. Thanks in advance, your help would be appreciated!

Before you ask any questions regarding access problems in the Tools project:
  • Please read Help:Access; especially if your username on your own system is different from your Labs account, make sure that you log in as 'shellusername'@tools-login.wmflabs.org.
  • You can find your shell username here in the field "Instance shell account name".
  • If you're using PuTTY or WinSCP, please read Help:Access to ToolLabs instances with PuTTY and WinSCP.
Still problems? Just ask! :-)

RE: Welcome to Tool Labs

Hi Tim, I have used Toolserver before to fetch data for academic research. It looks like the Labs were created with a slightly different purpose - for Wikipedia development. Thus you have projects-tools which people can join to work on specific tasks. If I want to write and run scripts that would get me the data such as number of edits for certain articles etc., what do I do? How can I do it within the Labs paradigm? Do I create a tool for that?

Thanks!

You don't have to; for one-off queries you can just "sql enwiki_p" (for example) to connect to the English Wikipedia database and run some queries. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 15:36, 13 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

RE: Welcome to Tool Labs

Thank you!

Someone told me on IRC that 'tools' is a little easier (though slower) to do what I want.

As I've never done this before, I thought to start testing there, and eventually move to other Labs projects (or a new one).

What do you think? - Raylton P. Sousa (talk) 12:53, 5 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

You can install MediaWiki as a tool account, so that you have a wiki for example under http://tools.wmflabs.org/some-account/w/index.php?title=Some_page. But for many extensions, there are more focused projects that target special extensions or use cases. You can look at the list of all projects and search for "Extension" to get an idea. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 17:32, 5 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Queries stats

I'm trying to understand what load Tool Labs is currently sustaining, but it seems we lack meaningful statistics? Is there an equivalent for queries count? I found only the hits stats (they appear to be less some 5 % of the TS') and SGE stats (but on TS they're broken). --Nemo 09:54, 15 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Unable to connect to enwiki_p

I was following the instructions given (User:Magnus Manske/Migrating from toolserver) [1] by I ended up with the following error: {{{ $ sql enwiki_p ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'enwiki.labsdb' (110) }}} Auduwage (talk) 04:23, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Tim for welcome and activation. As I wrote in my brief self-introduction, I'm deeply worried about the whole thing, I remember my first steps into Toolserver as a nightmare, and I'll go on very slowly with my tests; but I invited here it:s:User:Candalua too, that's really competent and skilled and drives a global bot, so I'm sure I'll get needed help without any need to waste your time. :-) --Alex brollo (talk) 09:35, 9 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

User access

Hello,

In trying to add maintainers to my project citation-bot, I seem to have removed myself as a maintainer. Are you able to restore me, please?

Thanks

Smith609 (talk) 12:28, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Done. I also removed the service group local-citation-bot from itself; it shouldn't be necessary and likely can only make things very confusing :-). --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 14:44, 5 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

IRC ("InterNet Relay Chat") are online chat rooms. The English Wikipedia has a tutorial on how to connect to it. You usually can find users and administrators of Wikimedia Labs in the channel "#wikimedia-labs". --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 05:05, 23 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

There seems to have been some sort of hiccup. User:Ryan Lane added you to the Bastion project, and access should now work as advertised. Welcome again! :-) --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 05:20, 23 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Error in login

Hi brother, when I login to labs via putty, get the following error:

Using username "▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒".

If you are having access problems, please see: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Access#Accessing_public_and_private_instances Server refused our key

so what should I do? Muhammad Shuaib (talk) 18:07, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Have you looked at the provided link? I. e., are you using the Labs shell username, do you use the key whose public key you uploaded to your wikitech preferences? --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 18:17, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, all steps had been copleted before login. Is shell username same as my username on this wikitech?? Muhammad Shuaib (talk) 18:24, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
No; go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-personal; your shell username is listed there under "Instance shell account name". --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 19:08, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, problem is shell account. Now successfully logged in. again thanks :) Muhammad Shuaib (talk) 11:32, 12 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Shell access

Hi brother, please grant me shell access again. I have read all instructions and rules and would follow them, thanks. Muhammad Shuaib (talk) 18:39, 21 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

I've restored your access to shell and the Tools project again. It looks as if in the process your personal home directory on Tools was deleted, so you'll need to re-upload your files there. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 00:33, 22 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Error in Creating directory

Hi Brother, When i try to create directory or copy any file from my pc to my tools account on labs using my winSCP, get the following error:

Error code: 3
Error message from server: Permission denied

--Tahir mq (talk) 13:43, 27 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Have you looked at Help:Access to ToolLabs instances with PuTTY and WinSCP? What is the precise name of the directory or file you are trying to create? --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 14:21, 27 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes I have read these instructions, but selected file protocol as SFTP, now i changed it to SCP. and problem solved :) thanks Tahir mq (talk) 15:09, 27 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, problem is not solved, I am trying to create Directory in my tools account (/data/project/tahir) not in </root>/home/tahir (here i created directory successfully), but get error. Tahir mq (talk) 15:22, 27 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Apparently, there is a bug in our NFS server (settings) at the moment. I have filed a report to track it; if you have a Bugzilla account, please add yourself to the CC list if you are interested.
On the command line, you can work around the bug by executing newgrp local-tahir before copying files to your tool's directory. However, I don't know how this can be done with scp or WinSCP.
Unfortunately, I don't have better news at the moment, sorry :-). --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 06:36, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Need for a human tutor

First, thakns for your attention and comments.

Really I feel the need of some tutoring - I'm both a DIY (do it yourself) "programmer" and almost completely confused by a linux environment, I'm using happily Windows XP on my pc.

Can I address my banal questions here? Can you suggest other possible tutors/tutoring pages if my questions waste your time?

I moved to tools-dev and removed from python code my personal access keys to Internet Archive, so I can publish my code here; my only worry is, that they could kill some valuable programmers by this letal incident. --Alex brollo (talk) 08:53, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

You're not wasting my time :-). But unfortunately, I'm not knowledgeable about each and every programming language, tool, etc. I guess Nova Resource Talk:Tools or the mailing list (labs-l) might have a broader audience that might yield better results. Don't be shy about publishing your code though; it's the only way to become better at it :-). --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 00:43, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Lost access to tools-dev.wmflabs.org

Hi Tim, I used to be able to access my folder (torin8) at tools-dev.wmflabs.org, but now cannot connect to my account. Can you please check it?

I'd like to connect to bast1001 or terbium, but when I log in, the server denies my access. I need the access to run some MySQL queries. Can you add me to the relevant groups of users? Thanks! Torin

As far as I can tell, your account looks fine. What error message do you get? Are you sure you use the same key that you uploaded to your preferences? Are you logging in as torin8@tools-dev.wmflabs.org? --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 00:46, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I am logging in as torin8@tools-dev.wmflabs.org and my SSH key is the same as in preferences. The error I was getting was permission denied. Now when I try to connect to tools-dev.wmflabs.org, I always get a Network error: Connection timed out (I am using the same credentials). This happens both for Putty and WinSCP. The only server that I can successfully can connect to is torin8@bastion.wmflabs.org. But it seems that I cannot run MySQL queries from under this server. Can you please help me? Torin04:44, 18 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Also, when I am logging in via tools-login.wmflabs.org and try to access my folder in home/torin8, I get the following error message from WinSCP:
Permission denied.
Error code: 3
Error message from server: Permission denied
Request code: 3
In Putty, I get the following line:
Could not chdir to home directory /home/torin8: Permission denied
-bash: /home/torin8/.bash_profile: Permission denied

Torin 07:47, 20 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Also, when I run MySQL queries from tools-login.wmflabs.org I get this:
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'torin8'@'10.68.16.7' (using password: NO)
It happens no matter if I run it as torin8@tools-login:/data/project/icelab$ or if I become my tool (Icelab).

Batch jobs

I'm launching, as alebot/itsource, sequencies of (heavy) individual jsub calls listed into a .sh file at dev-eqiad. But I'm running .sh file from console/from bastion, just to have some immediate console feedback of ongoing jobs who have a -sync y parameter (so I see output code 0/1/SIGKILL at the end on any job).

Is it an acceptable compromise, or I'd better run the .sh file too under jsub? Alex brollo (talk) 12:21, 13 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

That looks perfectly okay to me. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 00:48, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Consider that I'm the first one to be deply surprised that the whole thing runs, considering my skill level (almost zero) into a unix/linux environment.... o_O; a proof that help pages, and help from users into wiki context, are much more successful than in best dreams. set permission

Hi, I have faced an issue at "Pages created" tool. Regarding shell

Hello. Thank you for processing my shell access request. There's a minor problem I encountered, though.

I used to have commit access to Subversion before the migration to Git with the username mgrabovsky. Recently, I decided I wanted to become active again, and wanted to create an account here so that I could work with Gerrit. However, when using mgrabovsky as the shell account name on the account creating page, I got back "Account creation error. There was either an authentication database error or you are not allowed to update your external account."

I asked about this on #wikimedia-dev and #wikimedia-tech, but got no response. Therefore, I tried grabovsky (with which I'm not entirely happy) and it worked. My question is then: Is it possible to change the shell username or "merge" it with (or connect this account to) the previous user which I used with SVN?
