The University of Maryland's Testudo statues are thought to bring good luck to students who rub their noses.

This is such a beloved campus tradition that the school's coronavirus guidelines page includes a line advising students not to do it unless precautionary measures are taken.

At the bottom of a list that includes things like "Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth" and "Wash your hands often or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol," you will also find this guidance:

"Do not rub the Testudo statues for good luck before using wipes to clean before and after."

This comes after news in recent days that several people in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia have tested positive for the virus.

Maryland has three confirmed cases of coronavirus in the state. On Thursday evening, Gov. Larry Hogan announced that all three people with the virus live in Montgomery County.

On Saturday, The DC Health Department is confirming two people have tested positive for the coronavirus, one man from the District and one man visiting from Nigeria.

The Pentagon reported Saturday that a U.S Marine assigned to Fort Belvoir tested positive for the coronavirus. He recently returned from official business overseas. The Marine is being treated at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Virginia. It’s the first positive coronavirus case reported in Virginia.
