The famed Golden Temple in Amritsar has added another feather to its already illustrious cap. The World Book of Records (WBR), a London-based organisation that catalogs and verifies world records, has bestowed the 'most visited place of the world' award to this Indian architectural marvel.

The Golden Temple has witnessed increased footfall of devotees and tourists alike, especially after the Heritage Street Project, an attempt to revamp the street leading up to Jallianwala Bagh and The Golden Temple, was implemented.

What is striking about the Golden Temple is the way it appears to be sitting on a pool of water. The entire structure, including its gold shimmering roof, is reflected in the Amrit Sarovar (Pool of Nectar).

The temple is a two-storey square marble wonder. The upper walls are covered in gold-leafed copper sheets. The domed minarets, a Muslim influence, stand in four corners. The four doors of the temple symbolise its openness to people from across the globe.

More than 1 lakh devotees, on an average, visit the temple on a daily basis. Over the weekends and for religious occasions, the footfall goes up to anywhere between 1.50 lakh and two lakh. The footfall has witnessed a significant increase since the live telecast of the auspicious gurbani kirtan. This is even more than the footfall the Taj Mahal receives daily, which is between 20,000-25,0000.
