WASHINGTON, January 21, 2022 — The public can visit a newly launched 1950 Census web page on Archives.gov for information and resources to help prepare for the April 1 release of the 1950 Census.

Discover the questions asked on the census, watch enumerator training videos, and learn more about what the National Archives is doing to expand access and involve users during this once-a-decade records release.
When the dedicated 1950 Census website launches on April 1, you will be able to search the population schedules by location and enumeration district. The Indian Reservation population schedules will also be searchable by reservation name.
For the first time, NARA will also providing a first draft of the name index and name search. The name index has been built using Amazon Web Services’ Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Textract tool. National Archives has coupled this draft of the name index with a transcription feature that will provide an opportunity for the public to refine and enhance the OCR-created names and make the population schedules more accessible to everyone.
NARA will also make the entire 1950 Census dataset available for bulk download on Amazon’s Registry of Open Data on the same day as the website launch. This will provide open access to anyone who would like to mine the data or create their own 1950 Census tools.
