What Better Time to Propose Than During the Olympic Games

The Olympics are all about athletic excellence, representing your country, and striving for a podium finish. But for Argentinian fencer Maria Belen Perez Maurice, the 2021 (officially 2020) Olympic Games will always hold another memory: the surprise marriage proposal from her coach and long-time lover, Lucas Guillermo Saucedo.

After a close 15-12 loss to Hungary's Anna Marton, Argentina's Maria Belen Perez Maurice was giving the standard post-match press conference when some excited laughter broke out among the reporters. "Turn around," the press corps urged, and when she did she was confronted with the surprise of a lifetime: her coach and boyfriend holding a sign: "Flaca, te queres casar conmigo? Po favo"

You probably don't need to speak Spanish to grasp the meaning, since love is, after all, an international language, though we'd note that Mr. Saucedo also drew an adorable little mouse (or perhaps a cat?) in the sign's upper right corner.

It turns out that this wasn't the first proposal: Mr. Saucedo tried his luck ten years ago, only to be shut down, but second chances are everything, and this time Maria Maurice accepted. “We are very happy," she told reporters aftwards. "We are very good partners. Of course, we have fights, but we enjoy each other’s time. We love each other so much, and we want to spend our lives together. We are going to celebrate in Buenos Aires with a big barbecue."

The loss has meant that they're forced out of the Olympic Village, owing to stringent COVID-19 restrictions, but they'll no doubt have plenty to talk about on their flight back to Buenos Aires.

Fellas, you may never have the opportunity to propose at the Olympics, in front of the watching eyes of the entire world, but that doesn't mean you can't find your own unique way to be bold and romantic.
