In case you're out of the loop, "doge" is Internet slang for "dog," but the specific doge meme took off in reference to a Japanese Shiba Inu dog named Kabosu, posted to the Internet by her owner, a kindergarten teacher. According to Internet meme dictionary KnowYourMeme.com, it was a combination of Tumblr, Reddit and 4chan that boosted the now-famous doge dog featured on the DOGECAN, but the popularity only skyrocketed after the launching of an alternative satirical cryptocurrency, Dogecoin: "Very currency – many coin – wow."

Today, Dogecoin has its own Twitter account with an astonishing 1.9 million followers, and its valuation on the crypto market has been slowly but steadily improving over the years.
