Triffon G. Alatzas

Publisher & Editor-in-Chief

Trif Alatzas was named Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the Baltimore Sun Media in March 2016. An award-winning reporter and editor during the past 31 years, Trif has held several roles at The Baltimore Sun since joining the organization in 2002, including Executive Editor/Senior Vice President, Head of Digital Media, Sports Editor and Business Editor. He oversees business operations and the newsrooms for The Baltimore Sun, The Baltimore Sun Media web sites and the company’s targeted media division of community newspapers and magazines. He led The Sun’s newsrooms through the company’s successful transition to paid digital subscriptions in 2011. He is credited with bridging the print and online divisions of the newsroom and ensuring The Sun’s journalists have an array of skills to maneuver between digital and print platforms seamlessly. He also developed and drove the editorial strategy in BSM’s 2014 acquisitions of The Annapolis Capital and The Carroll County Times. In 2014, he formed The Sun’s investigative team dedicating several journalists to watchdog reporting and expanded that coverage so reporters throughout The Sun’s newsroom participate in that work.

Under his leadership, Baltimore Sun Media and its journalists have continued the tradition of exceptional and award-winning journalism in Baltimore and throughout the region. The newsrooms were recognized during the past several years with more than 50 national awards for work including investigative journalism, online reporting and design as well as breaking news coverage. Baltimore Sun Media newsrooms were awarded Pulitzer Prizes in 2020 and 2019 and have been finalists for the award six times since 2015 for local reporting, breaking news, editorial writing and editorial cartoons. The Sun also has been named News Organization of the Year the past 12 years by the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association. The Sun’s “extraordinary efforts” to gain access to public records and to hold local officials accountable was recognized the past six years with the prestigious James S. Keat Freedom of Information Award. Trif served as a Pulitzer Prize juror in 2015 and 2016. He also serves on the board of directors for the Greater Baltimore Committee, the United Way of Central Maryland as well as the board of visitors at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Timothy J. Thomas

Senior Vice President, Business Development

Tim Thomas, who has been with Baltimore Sun Media since 1999, is responsible for growing company revenue and operating cash flow in non-traditional channels across our expansive portfolio. Tim previously served as vice president of marketing and communications and director of market research. Before joining the company, Tim worked for 15 years at Westinghouse/Northrop Grumman in various operations, research, strategic planning and business development positions, eventually leading the company’s package sorting systems business. He graduated at the top of his class with a Masters in Business Administration from what is now Loyola University Maryland. Tim also earned an undergraduate degree in mass communications (journalism) from Towson University.

Sam Davis

Managing Editor

Sam Davis is the Managing Editor for The Sun, directing The Sun’s newsroom as well the newsrooms for the 12 community publications and magazines. Sam began his career at The Sun in 1980 as an Editorial Assistant before being promoted to Sports Reporter, Local Sports Editor, Assistant Sports Editor, Deputy Sports Editor, Executive Sports Editor and Assistant Managing Editor/Sports. He has had various other responsibilities as an Assistant Managing Editor, including news, budget, recruitment and staff development. He is a native of Baltimore and a 1983 graduate of Coppin State University.
