  1. Arsenal 5-0 Chelsea: What Pochettino saidpublished at 23:04 23 April

Mauricio Pochettino looks down dejectedImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino speaking to TNT Sports: "I think we started the game not so well. We concede the goal and then it was difficult for us to recover from this goal.

"I think in the first half we compete after 10, 15 minutes. We could not approach the game like we started in the first half and we didn't compete the way we needed to compete and then when they scored the third it was easy for Arsenal to control the game.

"I think you need to be clinical. Like against Manchester City three days ago, we were not clinical and then today the same thing happened. Difficult performance because it is not nice to see your team play like this when you are meant to have full energy. After three days when you play a fantastic game against Manchester City, today we are disappointed with the performance."

On whether Cole Palmer was the reason they lost at Arsenal: "We cannot say that was the reason we lose the game but we lose a player who is a creative player who helps to link the team. We are losing players and that has made very difficult, the management. But I think today, more than that, it was difficult to be in the game.

"Where Arsenal are is where we need to be as well. We are talking too much this season and all the information we receive now is that we want to be in a different position next season."

On Chelsea's European prospects: "Now it is difficult to see the future because after this game we feel disappointed. It is difficult to talk about objectives.

"If we compete like Saturday, OK. But if we compete like today, do I think we deserve to go into Europe? I think in this way, no."

Chelsea captain Conor Gallagher on a young Chelsea supporter holding up a sign questioning the players' efforts at Arsenal: "We definitely are putting the effort in.

"I know how much it means to all the boys. It is a very young squad with not much experience as a team in the Premier League.

"We have had a lot of ups and downs and we are still improving as a team to get to the next level and today was one of those days we were nowhere near it. But also we will look at the performance and where we can improve and move forward."

  3. Arsenal 5-0 Chelsea: Key statspublished at 22:29 23 April

Here are the key facts and figures from Arsenal's home win over Chelsea in the Premier League on Tuesday.

    • Arsenal recorded their biggest ever victory against Chelsea across all competitions (5-0), while this was the Blues' heaviest defeat in a London derby since losing 6-0 to Queens Park Rangers in March 1986.

    • The Gunners have won three London derbies in league this season by five or more goals (5-0 v Crystal Palace, 6-0 v West Ham and 5-0 v Chelsea), the most such victories in a single campaign by a team in English league history.

    • Chelsea have conceded 57 goals in the Premier League this season - their most in a single campaign in the competition (overtaking their 55 from the 1994-95 and 1996-97 seasons).

    • Arsenal had 13 shots in the first half and 14 in the second half against Chelsea (27 in total) – indeed, these are now their two highest shot totals in a half of football against them on record in the Premier League (since 2003-04).

    • Kai Havertz became the first player to score a brace against Chelsea in the Premier League having previously played for them in the competition.

    • The Blues' starting XI in this game had an average age of 23 years and 169 days - their youngest ever for a Premier League match against Arsenal. In fact, only Leeds United in 1999-2000 (10) have named more starting XI's with an average age under 24 in a Premier League campaign than Chelsea this term (seven).

Arsenal moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League and made a potentially significant improvement to their goal difference with a crushing victory over Chelsea at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners backed up their win at Wolverhampton Wanderers with an emphatic performance helped by a dreadful display from a Chelsea side who looked like they wanted the season to end now after their FA Cup semi-final defeat by Manchester City.

Arsenal suffered last week with a home Premier League defeat by Aston Villa and a Champions League quarter-final exit to Bayern Munich but the manner of this win demonstrated the title momentum is now back with Mikel Arteta's team.

Leandro Trossard settled any early nerves when he beat Chelsea keeper Djordje Petrovic at his near post and while the visitors occasionally threatened in the first half, Nicolas Jackson missing a clear headed chance, Arsenal simply ran riot after the break.

The second goal Arsenal craved came as Ben White turned in after Chelsea failed to clear a corner before former Stamford Bridge forward Kai Havertz struck twice in eight minutes, the second a quite sumptuous finish from Martin Odegaard's magnificent pass.

As Chelsea subsided in embarrassing fashion, White looped his second over Petrovic. It pushed their goal difference up to +56 - 13 better than Liverpool's and 12 ahead of Manchester City - on what was pretty much the perfect night for Arsenal.

  5. Can Madueke prove it isn't 'Cole Palmer Football Club'?published at 13:52 23 April

Tuesday's match at Arsenal could be a chance for Noni Madueke to stake his claim to be an important part of Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea side.

The 22-year-old has started just six Premier League games this season, with Cole Palmer taking the majority of the headlines in his excellent first season at the club.

Palmer has scored 20 goals as he competes with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins for the Golden Boot and has been one of the few consistent parts of Chelsea’s season.

However, Palmer could miss his first match since December against Arsenal because of illness, which may present an opportunity to Madueke to show Pochettino he can be relied upon.

Madueke, has had a frustrating time since signing for the Blues for £30.7m in January 2023 and has been reprimanded by his manager twice this season - once when he was pictured out partying and most recently when he tried to take the ball from Palmer with Nicolas Jackson before a penalty in the 6-0 win over Everton.

But Pochettino believes with Palmer out, it is a chance for players like Madueke to take their chance.

"We will see. It is a good challenge if Palmer is not available. It’s a good challenge for his team-mates or those in a similar position.

"If I were them, I would be motivated to go there and show that this is Chelsea Football Club, not Cole Palmer Football Club."

"They are not jealous. They only want the same pill we provide Palmer! I am joking! They ask: 'Whatever you do for Palmer, we want the same.'

"It is a good example for them of why he is doing so well and why they are not capable of doing the same."

Although Madueke has found it tough at times, he has shown his potential with a number of flashes of his talent. However, Pochettino understands why it may be hard for a player to deal with the situation at the club.

"We need to be careful with young kids," Pochettino said before the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Manchester City.

“We need to be strong sometimes and we need to be nice and understand the situation.

"If you arrive at a club and, six months later, the club signs another player in the same position and with the same profile - maybe two more players - and then you have to fight for your position when you believed you were going to play, it's not easy.

"Young players need to make mistakes. It's important for us as a coaching staff to deal with the situation.

"It’s trying to understand what we expect from him. Most important for these young kids is to understand what they need to do."

  6. Short turnaround 'means great opportunities' for fringe playerspublished at 12:33 23 April

    Will Faulks
    Fan writer

    Chelsea fan's voice graphic

There is no time to stop and regret the weekend's mistakes for Chelsea and their staff.

It feels like they only just stepped off the pitch after another heart-breaking defeat - this time against Manchester City - but they are back in action already when they go to Arsenal in the Premier League later.

Mauricio Pochettino refused to complain about this scheduling, taking the high road while other coaches get in the mud battling with the FA and those behind the scenes making the decisions.

This rapid fire fixture will have benefits for some. It does certainly give a chance to new players to impress.

It looks a lot like Cole Palmer will have to be rested and, given Enzo Fernandez has an injury that is being managed as well, it would be a surprise if he is risked on such a short turnaround too.

That means great opportunities opening up in the middle of the park, and there is nobody better placed to take advantage of them than Carney Chukwuemeka.

He has deserved more starts but injuries have held him back.

Many fans were disappointed he did not make the line-up in either game last week, but given he is one of the few players able to replace both Palmer and Fernandez in the team, depending how Chelsea set up he is all but certain to finally get a chance at Emirates Stadium.

However, Arsenal away is not an easy game for anyone - let alone a Blues side that will be below full strength and low on confidence.

  7. Sutton's predictions: Arsenal v Chelseapublished at 08:35 23 April

    suttons predictions

Chris Sutton is making predictions for every Premier League game this season against a variety of guests. For this week's matches on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, he takes on actor Zack Morris, star of new thriller film Jericho Ridge.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

Arsenal bounced back from a bad week really well against Wolves on Saturday and won comfortably, but Chelsea put in a good performance too despite losing their FA Cup semi-final to Manchester City.

This feels like a really dangerous game for the Gunners, and the rivalry between the two clubs is going to be a big factor as well.

Chelsea probably should have beaten them at Stamford Bridge in October but let a two-goal lead slip late on.

They are making progress under Mauricio Pochettino but they still have a habit of shooting themselves in the foot like they did that day.

So, I am backing Arsenal to find a way of winning this one - although again it is going to be extremely close.

    Zack's prediction: 1-2

I've got some family and friends who are Arsenal fans, so I am going to annoy them and say Chelsea will win.

  8. What are Chelsea doing to be more sustainable?published at 16:04 22 April

Monday, 22 April marks Earth Day - a day in the international calendar that provides the opportunity to reflect, make change and understand more about sustainability and the impacts of climate change.

Sport and football are not immune to these issues and there has been increasing awareness of their relationship to the environment over the past few years.

Football has a global footprint and, as it continues to grow, it has been subject to questions and criticism over some of the decisions that could hinder efforts in reducing its impact, including expanding Uefa cup competitions and the men's Fifa World Cup.

The effects of adverse weather related to climate change has been increasingly felt, with a study last year showing extreme weather has affected 40% of football players and spectators.

But, football and its fanbase also have an opportunity to be part of the solution, with clubs like Forest Green Rovers showing how the sport's environmental footprint can be reduced.

We have taken a look into some of the key things Chelsea are doing to become more sustainable:

    • 100% of the club's energy is bought from renewable sources.

    • The club have reduced or removed single-use plastic products from operations, including up to 20,000 reusable cups being used on matchdays and 2,000 reusable cups for staff.

    • 100% of waste is diverted from going directly to landfill.

    • Rain water at the Cobham training ground is collected and reused.

    • They have provided education programmes including environmental sustainability and/or climate change to staff, players, fan groups and young people.

One important area all Premier League clubs can address to reduce their carbon footprint is their travel, as shown in BBC Sport research.

    Why is this important?

Football For Future is a non-profit organisation working with stakeholders across football to create a more environmentally sustainable culture and founder Elliot Arthur-Worsop told BBC Sport: "Climate change will be the defining challenge of our generation, and the future of football will be affected too.

"We're already seeing the impacts, with more than 120,000 English grassroots games being called off annually, and major tournaments such as the World Cup and Afcon being moved because of extreme weather.

"Beyond the pitch, the climate crisis threatens livelihoods and global food and water security.

"With its unparalleled social influence, football has an opportunity to inspire global climate action, from micro-behaviours to essential policy change."

  9. Jackson 'is going to have all my support' - Pochettinopublished at 15:00 22 April

Nicola Jackson sits dejected on the pitchImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino says players like Nicolas Jackson are "always going to lose" if they are compared with club legends like Didier Drogba.

The 22-year-old, who arrived from Villarreal in the summer, missed a number of big chances in the Blues' 1-0 FA Cup semi-final defeat by Manchester City on Saturday.

The forward has had a mixed first season with the club, scoring 13 goals and making five assists across 37 games.

"The first season is always difficult for players - especially when you are in a position like a striker... and every single touch is expected to score goals," Pochettino said.

"He is the only striker we have fit. [Christopher] Nkunku is out and then [Armando] Broja moved to Fulham to play more. [Jackson] is doing fantastic - an amazing job for team - running, scoring goals and giving assists.

"If you compare to players like Didier Drogba they're always going to lose. We split the history of the club with the performance of the team and Jackson. He is going to have all my support."

Chelsea will be hoping the Senegal international can put the missed chances behind him as they chase European positions in the Premier League table, beginning with a trip to Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal on Tuesday.

"Even if he doesn't score, he is fighting for the club and for the team and producing some chances," added Pochettino.

"He needs time to improve. He will be better next season - no doubt. He just needs to keep going."

  10. Pochettino on Palmer illness and support for Jacksonpublished at 13:52 22 April

    Alex Howell
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has been speaking to the media before Tuesday's trip to face Arsenal in the Premier League (20:00 BST kick-off).

The game against the title chasers comes just three days after the Blues' FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester City.

Here are the key lines from the news conference:

    • On Cole Palmer's availability after the playmaker missed training because of illness: "We need to assess tomorrow morning. Today, I don't believe he can be involved because we need to assess him and then decide. If he will be good tomorrow maybe he is not in a condition to play."

    • On injuries to Malo Gusto and Ben Chilwell: "Malo suffered a minor injury, a little problem with the ligament of his knee. I'm not a doctor but it's not a big issue. Chilly, after playing for the national team, has the same issue he has had over the past few weeks."

    • On defender Thiago Silva's future: "He was saying after [the FA Cup semi-final] that now is not the time to talk. When he wants to communicate some things, he will, and the club will communicate the situation. So far we were not talking. We were in the semi-final of the FA Cup and now are trying to finish high up the league table."

    • On Nicolas Jackson, who missed some good chances against City: "The first season is always difficult for all the players, especially when you are a striker and need to perform and score goals. Everyone expects you to score a goal with every touch. He is our main striker, the only striker that we have fit."

    • More on Jackson: "He's doing an amazing job for the team - running, scoring goals and giving assists. If we compare with [Didier] Drogba, yes, he is always going to lose. We need to split the history of the club with the performance of Jackson. He has all my support. He is going to be better next season, no doubt. He just needs to keep going."

    • On how the players are after losing to City: "The mood is good because we played so well. We created so many chances against the best team in the world - that is a good thing. To reach this level, we have to keep working and try to add things to the team that can help us. This is our first season together. We need to be happy because the evolution is situations is good."

    • On reaching Arsenal's level in the future: "We are optimistic and in football the most important thing is to believe and have the plan to get to this level. Arsenal were in a different situation a few years ago when Arteta arrived. Then with time, a few years of trust and confidence in him, they're there. We need to have time to work."

    • On not having consistency this season and positives: "To increase the number of players available is going to be a challenge for next season. Being consistent is about having all the players fighting for a place on the pitch. We didn't have the possibility during the whole season, for different circumstances, to have all the squad available. To match the history of the club is difficult, but in the way that we split the team and evolution, and all the circumstances, we need to take many positive things."

  11. Arsenal v Chelsea: Pick of the statspublished at 11:29 22 April

The key facts and figures before Arsenal host Chelsea in the Premier League on Tuesday (20:00 BST)

    • Arsenal have lost just one of their past eight Premier League games against Chelsea. Their four-match unbeaten run is their longest against the Blues in the league since a 19-game streak between 1995 and 2005.

    • Chelsea are unbeaten in their past eight Premier League games (W4 D4), scoring at least twice in their past six. They last had a longer run without defeat between January and March 2021 (10).

    • Arsenal lost 2-0 to Aston Villa in their last home game – they were last beaten in consecutive league games at Emirates Stadium in April 2022.

    • Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has never won a Premier League away game against the Gunners, drawing four and losing three of his seven visits to the Emirates in the competition with Southampton and Tottenham.

    • Since the start of last season, Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka has been involved in more London derby goals in the Premier League than any other player (17 – eight goals, nine assists).

    • Cole Palmer has scored 20 league goals this season, with 10 coming in his past five appearances. Only three Blues players have scored more in a Premier League campaign – Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (23 in both 2000-01 and 2001-02), Frank Lampard (22 in 2009-10) and Didier Drogba (29 in 2009-10).

  12. Does Jackson's profligacy hint at better times ahead?published at 10:56 22 April

    Nat Hayward
    BBC Sport journalist at Wembley

Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea in the netImage source, Getty Images

To score goals you have to miss chances.

As Alan Shearer - the best goalscorer the Premier League has ever seen - has said, external, "not being afraid to miss again is part of what separates good forwards from the elite".

Nicolas Jackson is not elite. Yet. He is raw, unrefined and inconsistent.

On Saturday, his finishing cost his team in the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Manchester City. But, he gets chances and he keeps coming back for more.

At Wembley, he unsuccessfully attempted to round Stefan Ortega when clean through on goal in the first half and had two close-range efforts in succession blocked by the City goalkeeper in the second.

However, Jackson's appetite to drive with the ball, run in behind, and put himself in the right positions, never waivered.

That has been true for most of his mixed but promising debut season at Stamford Bridge. He has underperformed his Premier League xG of 13.9 - scoring 10, with no penalties - but he has never hidden.

It stands to reason more of these chances will find the net once he is into a second season and more familiar with his club and team-mates. Strikers rarely become cold blooded, clinical marksmen overnight - see Darwin Nunez at Liverpool - but a gradual improvement from a solid base is eminently possible.

That he has nobody to really share the goalscoring spotlight and burden with is an oversight from the owners and no fault of his own. He has had to be the main man in a year where he should have been learning in a supporting role.

Jackson would be a far bigger cause for concern if the reason he was missing chances was that he was not getting them, rather than needing to hone his composure in front of goal.

  13. Your views on Man City v Chelseapublished at 09:23 22 April

    Your views banner

We asked for your views Manchester City's victory against Chelsea in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final.

Here are some of your answers:

    Manchester City fans

Tim: I don't see how people say that Chelsea were the better team. They had chances but Nicolas Jackson didn't have his shooting boots on. Manchester City were patient and the better team in percentage possession. Goal was just a manner of time. Now it's back to the Premier League and looking forward to the FA Cup final in May.

Bruce: We looked tired, but when Doku came on, there was an almost palpable lift within the team and then we did what all good teams do - grind out a result.

Lewis: Overall a good City display, especially after Madrid game. De Bruyne has incredible energy and Grealish is starting to play well. No Treble but Double is alive!

    Chelsea fans

Will: Any other day Chelsea would have won that convincingly. Manchester City only came into the game during the second half, and Jackson really should have scored at least one of his chances. City didn’t deserve to win it, and hopefully Chelsea can bounce back against Arsenal.

Stevie: Great performance and probably should've won it with the quality of chances. However, all this game has made clear is that Pochettino has no idea of game management. He waited too long to make subs - AGAIN. Jackson, for all his work-rate, is not good enough for the club as the main striker and Gallagher is not good enough on the ball.

Riley: How many times - we need a new striker. Conversion seemed impossible with Nicolas Jackson up front while the rest of the team were playing some good football I haven’t seen in a while from Chelsea. Petrovic had a great game but our defending for Bernardo’s goal was not acceptable. Overall a pretty decent performance but in need of a proper goalscorer.
