Academic Standing
What does it mean to be in "good academic standing"?
When your cumulative grade point average (GPA) is at least 2.0 or better, you will be in good academic standing. If your cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0, you will be placed on either academic warning, probation, suspension or dismissal.
Are you in good academic standing?
It is important to check your academic standing at the end of each semester. The status of your academic standing may have implications that extend beyond your academics to potentially impact your financial aid.
Grade Point Averages (GPA)
Your academic standing is based off of your cumulative GPA, not your term GPA.
- Term GPA: GPA of all letter-graded hours and grade points earned in a term at BGSU.
- Cumulative GPA: Overall GPA of all letter-graded hours and grade points earned in all academic terms attended at BGSU.

How do I check my Academic Standing?
When your cumulative grade point average (GPA) is at least 2.0 or better, you will be in good academic standing. You will be able to find your academic standing by 11:59 p.m. the Wednesday following final exams in your MyBGSU Student Center.*
- Log in to MyBGSU
- Click on the Student Center
- Once in the Student Center, click on the Academics tile
- Select the semester you want to review
- Click "Academic Standing" in the navigation menu
- On the Academic Standing page, there will be a letter from your college office outlining your academic standing.
*Guest students, including College Credit Plus do not receive an academic standing.
How to Submit an Appeal
If you have a 2.0 cumulative GPA or if your academic standing is "warning" or "probation", the appeal process does not apply to you. You can only submit an appeal if your status is "suspended" or "dismissed".
Appeals are handled differently depending on the academic college to which your major belongs. When you look up your academic standing in your MyBGSU Student Center, you will find a letter from you college outlining additional information.
Suspension/Dismissal
- If you are part of the College of Arts & Sciences, and have been placed on academic suspension or dismissal, you will receive an email to your BGSU email account that outlines the steps you will need to take to submit an appeal. These steps include the deadline to appeal and the contact information for the College Dean.
- If you miss the deadline to appeal, you can still pursue an appeal up to the beginning of the semester; however, your classes will be dropped.
Probation/Warning
- If you have been placed on probation or warning, you will receive a notification letter attached to your grades via your BGSU email account.

Suspension/Dismissal
- If you are part of the Schmidthorst College of Business, and have been placed on academic suspension or dismissal, you must contact the Office of the College Dean to begin the appeal process.
- If you miss the deadline to appeal, you can still pursue an appeal up to the beginning of the semester; however, your classes will be dropped.

- If you are part of Deciding Student Programs, and have been placed on academic suspension or dismissal, you will receive a letter from your advisor to your BGSU email that outlines the appeal process.
- If you miss the deadline to appeal, you can still pursue an appeal up to the beginning of the semester; however, your classes will be dropped.

Probation/Warning/Suspension/Dismissal
- If you are part of the College of Education & Human Development, and have been placed on academic warning, probation, suspension or dismissal, you will receive a letter from the college to your BGSU email that outlines the appeal process.
- Students who miss the deadline may continue to pursue the appeal process; however, their schedule of classes will be dropped.

If you are part of Firelands College, and have been placed on academic suspension or dismissal, you will receive an email to your BGSU email account that outlines the steps you will need to take to submit an appeal. These steps include the deadline to appeal and the contact information for the Firelands College Academic Review Board.
If you miss the deadline to appeal, you can still pursue an appeal up to the beginning of the semester; however, your classes will be dropped. Please be sure to read all correspondence regarding your academic standing carefully to ensure that you do not miss any deadlines for appeals.
Probation/Warning
If you have been placed on probation or warning, you will receive a notification letter via your BGSU email account.
Suspension/Dismissal
- If you are part of the College of Health & Human Services, and have been placed on academic suspension or dismissal, you will receive a phone call and email from a college representative explaining the appeal process.
- Students who miss the deadline may continue to pursue the appeal process; however, their schedule of classes will be dropped.

- If you are part of the College of Musical Arts, and have been placed on academic suspension or dismissal, you will receive an email from a college representative explaining the appeal process.

- Students who miss the deadline may continue to pursue the appeal process; however, their schedule of classes will be dropped.

IMPORTANT
This page just outlines the academic standing process. There is separate information you need to know when it comes to financial aid. The financial aid satisfactory academic progress and academic standing process are two separate considerations and have two separate appeals processes.

Academic Warning
If a student's cumulative BGSU GPA is in the warning range, the student is placed on academic warning and is encouraged to limit enrollment to no more than 12 hours in a given semester until the student is in good academic standing. Students on academic warning are expected to seek appropriate advice and services from their college office or another academic support area. Students on academic warning are expected to increase attention to academic activities and decrease hours committed to non-academic activities.
Academic Probation
If a student's cumulative BGSU GPA is in the probation/suspension/dismissal range, the student will be placed on probation:
- who has attempted fewer than 12 hours of letter-graded credit at BGSU; or
- who has a cumulative GPA in the probation/suspension/dismissal range for the first time.
To improve their cumulative GPA to at least the warning range, students on academic probation are strongly advised to enroll for no more than 12 credit hours in any semester and are expected to work with their college office to develop a plan for improving their academic performance. Students on probation are expected to increase attention to academic activities and decrease hours committed to non-academic activities. It should be noted that teams, clubs, and other student organizations have the right to use academic standards to limit participation in their organization. In addition, the students on academic probation must adhere to any conditions as determined by the dean of their college.
Students who do not improve their cumulative GPA to at least the warning range will be placed on academic suspension if they have attempted 12 or more hours of letter-graded credit at BGSU.
Academic Suspension
A student who has been suspended may NOT enroll at the University for a period of two consecutive semesters, including summer semester. Students suspended following the fall semester may not return to the University in the subsequent spring or summer semesters. Students suspended following the spring semester may not return in the subsequent summer or fall semesters. Students suspended following the summer semester may not return for the subsequent fall or spring semesters. The student may file a written appeal to the dean of the student's college and, if successful, be allowed to attend classes during the next semester.
A student who is suspended may continue enrollment if the student meets one of the following conditions:
- if, during the previous semester, the student earned a semester GPA of at least 2.0; or
- if permitted as the result of a successful written appeal to the dean of the student's college.
Academic Dismissal
If a student's cumulative BGSU GPA is in the probation/suspension/dismissal range, the student will be dismissed from the University:
- who has attempted 12 or more hours of letter-graded credit at BGSU; and
- who has been placed on suspension in any previous semester.
A student who has been academically dismissed may NOT enroll at the University for a period of three calendar years. The student may file a written appeal to the dean of the student's college and, if successful, be allowed to attend classes during the next semester. The student may appeal once during the dismissal period.
A student who is dismissed may continue enrollment if the student meets one of the following conditions:
- if, during the previous semester, the student earned a semester GPA of at least 2.0; or
- if permitted as the result of a successful written appeal to the dean of the student's college.
