Gerontology: Long-term Care Administration
The bachelor of science in gerontology with a long-term care specialization prepares graduates to seek licensure as a nursing home administrator.
The licensed administrator holds an executive position overseeing clinical, financial, regulatory, and life safety.
Quality classroom experiences
The average class size is small allowing for students and faculty to interact on a more personal level. Students participate in volunteering, service learning and a required practicum that provides an understanding of the needs of older adults and the services they require.
Fully accredited by National Association of Long-Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) as a Health Services Executive Program which allows BGSU graduates to sit for licensure as nursing home, assisted living, and home and community based services administrators.
Career - what can you do with a gerontology degree?
The practicum experience blends theory from the classroom with practical experience in an agency serving older adults. Students specializing in LTC administration are required to complete an internship of at least 1,000 hours or as required by Ohio's Board of Executives of Long-Term Care Services and Support (BELTSS) and/or our accrediting body, the NAB.

Curriculum
The LTC administration specialization combines a major in gerontology with coursework in areas such as accounting, economics, and management. This specialization prepares students to sit for both the Ohio and federal nursing home administrator’s licensure examinations. Students are also prepared to sit for the national assisted living and home and community based services administrator exams.
