An Emirati woman said she withdrew accusations of gang rape by a police officer and five other men to avoid lashes and a jail sentence for having extramarital sex.

The 18-year-old, who is in pre-trial detention, said today in an interview in a courtroom in the United Arab Emirates’ capital, Abu Dhabi, that she had retracted the claim to “get out of here.” Lawyers for the men said a medical examination of the woman didn’t support her allegations of rape.
