With the coming of Islam, the attitude of the Arabs toward poetry seems to have changed. The new Muslims, despite their long-standing admiration for powerful language, often shunned poetry as reminiscent of pagan ideals now overthrown, for the Qurʾān (in surah 26:225 ff.) condemned the poets “who err in every valley, and say what they do not do.
