Retiring Senator William Armstrong spoke of his work as a Senator and Representative, and of the workings of the American political system. Senator Armstrong has served the U.S. Senate for twelve years and the U.S. House for four years, following several years of service in the Colorado Congress. Senator Armstrong is described in Politics in America as being an “intelligent, personable, and utterly confident” man. The book also talked about his federal government political career as being hampered because “he is engaged in an enterprise of which, in a profound philosophical sense, he disapproves.” The Senator counted the televising of the Senate as one of the highlights of his tenure. Describing the effect of televising the sessions he said, “What it has changed is the impact that the Senate has over the life of the nation.
