The panelists discussed the place of the public intellectual in American society. They talked about the influence of intellectuals in political life and the involvement of intellectuals in advocating for human rights and social change. They compared American and European intellectuals and discussed the varying role of intellectuals throughout world history. The discussion was inspired by Russell Jacoby’s book The Last Intellectuals: American Culture in the Age of Academe, which was originally published in 1987 and reissued in a new edition August 2000 by Basic Books and the occasion of the publication by Bison Books Corporation of The Sokal Hoax: The Sham That Shook the Academy, edited by the editors of Lingua Franca. After their remarks the panelists responded to questions from members of the audience. close
