Independent studios may be an endangered species in Hollywood these days, but they produce some of the most interesting films in release–despite numerous constraints. Nominations for the 11th annual Independent Spirit Awards were announced Thursday.

Best feature: “The Addiction,” “Leaving Las Vegas,” “Living in Oblivion,” “Safe” and “The Secret of Roan Inish.” Best first feature: “The Brothers McMullen,” “Kids,” “Little Odessa,” “Picture Bride” and “River of Grass.”

Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Georgia”), Elina Lowensohn (“Nadja”), Julianne Moore (“Safe”), Elisabeth Shue (“Leaving Las Vegas”) and Lili Taylor (“The Addiction”) were nominated for best actress. Nicolas Cage (“Leaving Las Vegas”), Sean Penn (“Dead Man Walking”), Tim Roth (“Little Odessa”), Jimmy Smits (“Mi Familia”) and Kevin Spacey (“Swimming With Sharks”) were nominated for best actors.

The decidedly low-key awards ceremony, an alternative to the Oscars, will be March 23.
