Newcastle is the Greggs capital of the UK with more than three times as many stores as the national average.

Our analysis of the locations of the bakery chain’s stores has picked out the places where you’re most likely to come across a Greggs.

And Newcastle emerged at the top of the tree with a whopping 29 Greggs outlets. This is the equivalent of 9.9 stores for every 100,000 people in the city - the highest rate for any local authority area in the country.

It means that you’re more than three times as likely to come across a Greggs in Newcastle , with the average figure nationally standing at 2.7 stores for every 100,000 people.

West Dunbartonshire in Scotland was second on the list with eight stores - the equivalent of 8.9 for every 100,000 people, while Gateshead came in at number three, with 17 stores at a rate of 8.5 stores per 100,000 people.

Sunderland finished eighth nationally with 20 stores, making it 7.2 per 100,000, and North Tyneside was 17th on the list with 12 stores - around 5.9 per 100,000.

Across the North East there are 85 Greggs stores. This is more than some areas with significantly higher populations. For example Greater Manchester only has 83 Greggs despite having a population in excess of double that of us.

A Greggs spokesman said: “Newcastle is our birthplace. John Gregg started out in Gosforth delivering eggs and yeast by bike in 1939.

“We’ve grown a lot since then but Newcastle is still and always will be our home.”

Across the UK, there are 1,747 Greggs according to the chain’s online store locator. Out of the 406 local authority areas in the country, only 58 didn’t have a Greggs.

And on a country level, Scotland has the greatest number of Greggs per head compared with England, Wales and Northern Ireland. There are 239 Greggs in Scotland at a rate of 4.4 per 100,000 people.
