Joe Sutton is Senior News Editor for CNN/US based at the network’s headquarters in Atlanta. In this role, he coordinates and covers domestic newsgathering for the national desk and works closely with the domestic regional bureaus, and field reporting teams, and collaborates across CNN’s networks and platforms.

Sutton is also the Chair of Warner Bros. Discovery’s LGBTQ+ Business Resource Group (BRG) in Atlanta.

Among recent CNN news stories Sutton worked on are the COVID-19 pandemic, the fatal high-rise collapse in Surfside, Florida, and the deadly mass shootings at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas and at the Independence Day Parade in Highland Park, Illinois. He also contributed to CNN’s robust coverage of Superstorm Sandy, California’s deadliest wildfire, the Boston Marathon bombings, the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and the deadly mass shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

Sutton is a member of the news team that received a News & Documentary Emmy Award for ‘Outstanding Breaking News Coverage’ for CNN’s coverage of the death of George Floyd. He contributed to the network’s Peabody Award-winning coverage of the U.S. Gulf Coast oil spill in 2010 and the Arab Spring uprising in the Middle East and North Africa in 2011.

Sutton has served in various roles across CNN, including as a producer for CNN Newsroom live broadcasts and CNN International live broadcasts.

Sutton graduated from Oglethorpe University with a B.A. in Communications and a minor in Political Science.
