DD: Hi, Ivan. Please tell us a little bit about your professional background. I believe you have a lot of experience with Alfresco, one of the leading document management systems?
IA: As you pointed out I have been working with Alfresco for many years. A little anecdote . . . I can tell you for some time I was the youngest engineer certified in Alfresco. I started to work with that platform very early, just after finishing my studies. I have to say that, thanks to that platform, which involves a lot of technologies, I learned a lot about how to solve a wide variety of engineering problems, like caching, clustering, backup and several others. Although most of my previous experience was centered around Alfresco, I have always been passionate about the front-end world, so every time I had the opportunity to work with any front-end technology, I was the first one to raise my hand.
Como bien has comentado, he estado trabajando con Alfresco durante varios años. Como pequeña anécdota, te puedo contar que durante algún tiempo fui de los más jóvenes certificados en Alfresco, así que puedes imaginar que empecé a trabajar con esta plataforma a muy temprana edad, justo al terminar mis estudios. La verdad es que gracias a esta plataforma, la cual abarca diferentes tecnologías, aprendí cómo resolver diferentes problemas de ingeniería, como caching, clustering, backing up y muchos otros. Aunque la mayoría de mi experiencia profesional estuvo ligada con Alfresco, siempre he tenido especial interés por el mundo del Frontend, así que siempre que he tenido la oportunidad he intentado trabajar con alguna tecnología de Frontend.
DD: What does your role as Technical Lead entail? What is the most challenging or interesting part of that job?
IA: I like to pay special attention to the word “lead” because that is how I see myself. Aside from the technical skills the role requires, you have to deal with people who are under your technical umbrella, so it means you have to know how to work with them. From my perspective, the most important thing is to keep your team as close as possible. In the end, unity gives you strength. After that, having confidence in your team allows you the ability to focus on the rest of the stuff, like all the issues around the project, whether technical or not. Thinking about the second question – the most challenging or interesting part – I think that dealing with people who work at high-level layers, like Business Analysts or Product Owners, in order to transform their high-level requirements into the technical solutions is the most challenging and interesting part at the same time.
Me gustaría señalar la palabra “líder” porque es como me veo a mi mismo. Aparte de las habilidades técnicas que este rol conlleva, tienes que trabajar con personas que están bajo tu responsabilidad técnica, lo que significa que tienes que saber cómo trabajar con ellos. Desde mi perspectiva, lo más importante es mantener el equipo lo más cercano posible, al final la unión hace la fuerza. Una vez tengas esta confianza de equipo, entonces, puedes centrarte en el resto de cosas, como los problemas, técnicos o no, alrededor del proyecto. Pensando en la segunda pregunta, sobre la parte más interesante o de mayor reto, diría que es transformar los requisitos definidos en alto nivel por los Business Analysts o Product Owners en una solución técnica.
DD: What has your experience of working from home been like?
IA: I have to say my answer to this question has surprised me. This is not my first time working from home. I already experienced this situation several years ago and it was not as enjoyable as I had imagined it would be. Now that I see it clearly, the problem at that time was me – I was not able to disconnect, I was not able to identify when my workday finished, and it was so frustrating. So when CCC decided to work remotely because of Covid-19, I was a bit worried, thinking that I would face the same situation again. But, fortunately, I was wrong. I am enjoying working from home a lot. In fact, I see a lot of benefits of that – for example, I don’t have to worry about traffic jams. And one of my main concerns about working from home was the communication with the team but, again, I was wrong. The communication is almost better than before and that is because now everyone makes the effort to get to the point.
Tengo que decir, que en su momento me sorprendí con la respuesta a esta pregunta. No es la primera vez que trabajo desde casa, ya algunos años atrás tuve la oportunidad de trabajar desde casa y la experiencia no fue tan buena como imaginaba. Ahora veo claramente que el problema de ello, era yo, que no era capaz de desconectar, de tener claro cuando mi día de trabajo había concluido y esto fue algo bastante frustrante. Así que cuando CCC decidió trabajar en remoto debido a la situación del Covid-19, me sentí un poco agobiado, pensando que reviviría la misma situación. Pero afortunadamente, estaba equivocado. He disfrutado trabajando desde casa. De hecho, le encuentro bastantes ventajas al hecho de trabajar desde casa, por ejemplo, ya no tengo que preocuparme por el tráfico. Además, una de mis principales preocupaciones respecto al trabajo desde casa, eran las comunicaciones con el resto de miembros del equipo, pero de nuevo, volvía a estar equivocado. La comunicación ha sido hasta mejor, ya que hemos ido al grano, sin tener tantas interrupciones innecesarias.
DD: If you had one thing to share with a prospective employee, to encourage them to come work with CCC at the Seville Office — or anywhere — what would that be?
IA: Motivation. What I have lived through while working for CCC is constant motivation – to grow as a professional, to learn from others, to work like a family, to be respectful, to deliver quality content, and so much more.
Motivación. Lo que he vivido y vivo trabajando en CCC es una constante motivación, motivación en como mejorar como profesional, en aprender de otros, en trabajar como una familia, en ser respetuoso, en entregar contenido de calidad, y mucho más.
DD: One more question. I heard through the grapevine that you recently did some skydiving for the first time. What was that like? Would you recommend it?
IA: I see that news travels fast! I had the opportunity to enjoy nice views of Dubai while I was skydiving. I would define it as a mix of feelings from freedom to exciting. And for sure I would recommend it, but please be aware: Anyone with vertigo or cardiac issues would be better off watching it on TV.
Veo que las noticias vuelan! La verdad es que tuve la oportunidad de disfrutar de las vistas de Dubái mientras hacía paracaidismo. Esta experiencia la podría definir como una mezcla de sensaciones, entre libertad y emoción. Y por supuesto que lo recomiendo, pero por favor absténganse personas con vértigo o problemas cardíacos, para estos casos, mejor verlo en televisión.
