A bachelor’s degree in esports, anyone? Lyceum of the Philippines University is developing an esports curriculum with Tier One Entertainment, a company co-founded by Alodia Gosiengfiao.
They plan to submit the curriculum to the Commission on Higher Education in March. If all goes well, the course on video game sports will be open to students within the year.
Contrary to what some may think, it won’t be all ~fun and games~. Co-founder Tryke Gutierrez said the proposed four-year program will have two tracks: game design development and esports management.
He clarified that it’s “not designed to develop pro players. It is meant for those who will work on the backend operations of esports.” He shared a list of possible jobs for graduates of the course:
Alodia, one of the top cosplayers and gamers in the country, talked about her early days and the future of the industry. “‘What do you do?’ ‘Why do you do this?’ ‘Are you sure there's a future in this field?’ To be honest, back then I really didn't know. All I knew is that I loved what I did, I got to meet amazing people with the same passion all over the world, and I got to help other people do this as well.”
“Little did I know that the industry would grow into something… It's huge and it's changing the world. I'm just glad I didn't let go of my dream and hopefully the next generation won't let go of theirs, too.”
Esports is one of the fastest rising industries in the world, and it’s projected to hit USD 1.8 billion (about 91.39 billion pesos) in revenue by 2022, according to Business Insider. Asia Pacific, North America, and Europe are the top esports markets.
