Activists organised protests in front of the Sudanese Foreign Ministry and the Egyptian embassy in Khartoum yesterday, demanding the release of the Sudanese student Waleed Abdelrahman, who was arrested in Cairo for his participation in last Friday's demonstrations.
The family of Abdelrahman expressed deep concern for the arrest of their son in Egypt. They said that he was a student at Omdurman El Ahliya University who traveled to Cairo to study German after the prolonged suspension universities in Sudan. He does not belong to any Islamic group, they said.
The Sudanese Professionals Association demanded the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intervene urgently to know the circumstances of the arrest of the student. It also wants the ministry to ensure that Abdelrahman was and is not subjected to coercion or torture, to enable him to contact his family, and to assign him a lawyer to attend the investigations.
Egypt holds an estimated 60,000 political prisoners in detention. Since last week more than 1,900 people have been arrested.
