The United Nations, the African Union, and the Sudan Troika all condemned the attempted military coup at dawn on Tuesday, and expressed their support for the Sudanese transition towards democracy.
“The United Nations rejects any calls for a military coup or the replacement of the transitional government with military rule,” Volker Perthes, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), said in a statement yesterday.
“I reiterate the United Nations' continued commitment to assist, advise and support inclusive civilian governance in Sudan,” he said, referring to “the aspirations of the Sudanese people towards a peaceful, stable and democratic future”.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki Mahamat, as well condemned the attempted coup on Tuesday. He congratulated the Sudanese with the coup’s failure, and stressed the need to adhere to the legitimate authorities.
The Sudan Troika (the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Norway) expressed its strong support for the Sudanese transition.
“The civilian and military components – and indeed all political actors – should work together to prevent threats to the democratic transition, establish transitional institutions, and address tensions in the East and other regions.
“Those who would seek to undermine the civilian-led transition should understand that Sudan’s international partners stand firmly behind the people of Sudan and their transitional government,” the three countries said in a joint statement yesterday.
