South Sudanese President meets with Darfur rebel leader

Salva Kiir, President of South Sudan, discussed peace issues with Jibril Ibrahim, leader of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), in Juba on Wednesday.

JEM leader Jibril Ibrahim described the talks with the President as “constructive and fruitful”.

He told reporters in Juba after the meeting that the South Sudanese President had invited him for consultations on the role of Juba in achieving peace and stability in Sudan and the region.

Ibrahim said he briefed Salva Kiir on the talks recently held in Cairo with the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC).

The spokesman for the movement, Mutasim Salih, said in a statement on Thursday that the meeting of the JEM leader with Kiir dealt with issues of peace, ways to address the effects of war and democratic transition, and the situation of displaced people and refugees in Sudan.

The FFC consultations with the Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) coalition of armed movements in the Egyptian capital last weekend were aimed at discussing the reservations of the SRF on the Constitutional Declaration, agreed on by the junta and the FFC on August 3.

According to FFC leader Wajdi Salih, the parties of the Cairo meeting made sure to include most of the provisions of the Addis Ababa Agreement with accurate legal provisions that had satisfied the SRF to some extent.

Salih expressed optimism that the peace agreement will be signed within two months following the formation of the new Sudanese government.
