Libraries across Devon and Torbay are calling for children to sign up to the Wild World Heroes Summer Challenge and read six books this summer as part of the 2021 Summer Reading Challenge.

The Wild World Heroes!
This year, the Summer Reading Challenge’s Wild World Heroes will celebrate the environment, explore nature, and find ways to save the planet.
Children taking part in the Challenge will join the Wild World Heroes, a team of young heroes and their animal companions who are taking action to save the natural world.

Join the Wild World Heroes and discover awesome books to read.
This year’s theme encourages children to think about the environment, while reading any books of their choice – from fiction, to poetry, to comics, and more!
As they read more books, children will collect stickers along the way to add to their map of Wilderville, fixing environmental problems in different areas.

Bespoke artwork!
The 2021 Challenge features bespoke artwork from award-winning children’s author and illustrator Heath McKenzie (Who Do You Go For?; Do Not Open This Book; Archie: No Ordinary Sloth).
Children who complete the Challenge, by reading at least six books over the summer, will be awarded a certificate and medal for their achievement and entered into a prize draw.
Take Part! On or Offline
Children are able to come in to their local library to sign up for and participate in the challenge. However, please do keep an eye on our roadmap for updates and guidance, in line with government restrictions.
For those unable to attend their local library in person, the Summer Reading Challenge website offers an option to sign up online. Children can participate online by recording the books they read, writing reviews, and playing games.

About the Summer Reading Challenge
Libraries across Devon and Torbay are calling for children to sign up to the Wild World Heroes Summer Challenge and read six books this summer as part of the 2021 Summer Reading Challenge.
Each year the Challenge motivates over 700,000 children nationally to keep reading to build their skills and confidence.
Completing the challenge
Children who complete the Challenge by reading at least six books over the summer, can collect a certificate and a medal from their local library. When they collect their medal, they will also be entered into a prize draw!
Each child chooses their own reading goal of at least six books, and collects stickers and other rewards on their journey to completing the challenge and saving Wilderville!

The Summer Reading Challenge, presented by The Reading Agency, is delivered in partnership with public libraries and funded by Arts Council England.
The Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to enjoy the benefits of reading for pleasure over the summer holidays, providing lots of fun and enjoyment as well as helping to prevent the summer reading 'dip'.
The Summer Reading Challenge website is free to access and features games, quizzes and downloadable activities that encourage children to take part in reading related activities.

This year’s theme is Wild World Heroes, encouraging children to explore ways of helping to save the planet, with a focus on taking action for nature and tackling real-world environmental issues, from plastic pollution and deforestation to wildlife decline and nature loss.
Through taking part in the Challenge, children will be able to join the Wild World Heroes to help solve some of these threats, learning about the importance of the environment while helping to restore nature levels in the neighbourhood of ‘Wilderville’
