Supporting The Reading Challenge
Join our volunteers
Every library in Devon is run by paid library staff, but there are lots of volunteering opportunities for people who wish to get involved and support their local library and community. Your Devon library offers a variety of events and activities, as well as providing access to a wealth of resources and information.
What our current volunteers say about volunteering with us:
“I enjoy the opportunity to engage with all sorts of people. Satisfaction of doing something positive and contributing towards helping others” Sally, Exeter
“A sense of purpose and feeling useful. Meeting new friends and learning what’s going on” Elizabeth, Tavistock
“I think I definitely improved my confidence and gained new friends along the way. I also think I improved my communication skills. This volunteering role has made me grow as a person” ZuZanna, Torrington

If you would like to find out more about volunteer roles currently available near you call into your library for a chat with the Library Supervisor or give them a ring. Our friendly library staff will be happy to discuss a role in more detail so that you can decide if it’s the right role for you.
All volunteers will be asked to fill in an application form and attend an interview held at the library. Successful applicants will be asked to supply details of two referees.
Volunteers for some roles are subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Libraries Unlimited will provide any training or inductions necessary.
Volunteering opportunities for young people
Almost all library volunteer roles are open to applicants aged 14+, but young volunteer support for the Summer Reading Challenge is for young people aged 14 -17. Visit your local library to find out more about how you can get involved in the Summer Reading Challenge.
Home Library Service Volunteers
Devon Libraries works with volunteers to deliver library books and audiobooks to people who, through ill health, injury or disability, cannot visit a library or are too frail to carry heavy books. For more information on accessing the service and the volunteering opportunity please contact your local library or email home.library@librariesunlimited.org.uk
