Checklist for your first visit

A woman with a German National Library bag sits on a concrete wall and reads on her smartphone.

We have the following tips to make sure that you can work effectively on your first visit:

  • Please register on our homepage under “My Account”
  • After you have been approved to use the reading rooms, you can order up to ten media from our catalogue. The media will be available no later than the next working day (Monday – Friday).
  • Your free library card will be given to you when you show your personal ID. If you bring your passport instead of a personal ID card, you will also require official confirmation of your place of residence.
  • Administrative fees and other fees listed in the fee schedule.
  • Please hand over coats, jackets, bags and backpacks for storage in the cloakroom.
  • You can take your own work materials (laptop, books, writing materials) into the reading rooms in a transparent bag.
  • You will need two two-euro coins to use the cloakroom lockers in Frankfurt am Main.
  • Please bring your own headphones if you plan to use audiovisual media.
  • Internet access at the stationary workstations is free of charge, as is WLAN (DNB network and eduroam), which can be used on your own mobile devices.
  • You will need your own USB stick if you intend to store data from the internet, scans of printed media or print your own files.
