Help organise and enable: administration & more

Our legal mandate is as extensive as it is unique. This is why the German National Library needs efficient administration. The mandate encompasses a wide range of tasks – from legal counselling through finance, organisation, personnel recruitment, service and development, events, property management, acquisitions and contracting to technical facility management services. For each of these tasks, we are looking for competent experts who want their work to make a meaningful contribution and help shape the future of our cultural heritage.

This often includes special projects as well as our day-to-day work and our efforts to bring about digital transformation. These projects include the technically challenging extension being constructed in Leipzig, which we will be monitoring at all stages from planning via construction to opening.

As a federal institution with legal capacity under public law, we maintain our own culture. This is expressed in the mutual appreciation shown by colleagues, the freedom we have to work independently and flexibly, and – as an employer – our willingness to accommodate our staff.

Making our collection mandate legally certain

Our mandate as Germany’s cultural memory also includes clarifying legal issues at the interface of administration, science and culture. Our legal counselling department works in a number of areas ranging from employment law and copyright to general civil law. We take a service-oriented, practical approach to helping our colleagues and make sure that their everyday work is legally certain. We regularly recruit fully trained lawyers and train legal trainees who are preparing to qualify.

Dorothea Zechmann

"The German National Library’s physical and digital collections are a valuable asset which can be enhanced still further with IT support. We can use methods from the fields of machine-based learning and data science to help do this.“
