Newspapers and journals

Printed periodicals

A large part of our collection is made up of newspapers and journals, together referred to as “periodicals”. These publications are issued on a regular basis, although the frequency may vary. We collect periodicals published in Germany and German-language periodicals published abroad. At the beginning of 2023 our collection encompassed around 314,000 printed periodicals, more than 52,000 of which were serial publications. Around 2,400 issues and editions are added every day.

Our collection includes daily and weekly newspapers. We also collect general magazines and specialised journals on all subjects and areas of knowledge. These include glossy magazines, news and business magazines, the so-called yellow press and magazines for children and young people. Our extensive collection of printed periodicals also encompasses customer, employee and member magazines, school magazines, programmes, exhibition catalogues, course catalogues, club magazines, parish newsletters, telephone and address directories, official gazettes and loose-leaf publications (for example legal commentaries).

E-Papers

There is an e-paper version of almost every daily newspaper published in Germany. These are digital editions with the same layout as the printed newspapers. While we once stored around 700 different printed newspapers on microfilm, we now collect the e-papers. The number of newspapers available in e-paper format is around 1,600. We have been collecting these digital issues since 2010. At the beginning of 2023, we had around 3,6 million issues with more than 45 million pages in our collection. We dispense with microfilm if we are able to collect a newspaper in e-paper format.

E-Journals

Journals are frequently published in digital format. Some of these e-journals are issued parallel to the printed editions, while others are published in digital format only. These are also added to our collection. At the beginning of 2020, our e-journal collection encompassed more than 8,400 serial publications with around 2.9 million single files.
