Abstract

Purpose

The open access movement has become the center of discussion during the last decade. Open access publishing facilitates researchers' and scientists' access to research literature through the internet free of cost. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the awareness of open access publishing among researchers and faculty members of Indian institutions, and to evaluate the development of open access initiatives in India.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on both primary and secondary sources of data. For studying awareness of open access publishing, a survey was conducted among the researchers of IITs and IIMs in July‐August 2012 by using a closed ended questionnaire. The growth of open access initiatives in India is analyzed through data collected from secondary sources, i.e. the websites of Ulrich's, DOAJ, ROAR, and OpenDOAR.

Findings

The results showed that India's contribution has increased in the last few years. It was found that the awareness about such open access information sources and initiatives among the research community is increasing.

Originality/value

This study will assist in understanding the practices of open access publishing in India.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the erosion performance of high velocity oxy fuel- (HVOF) sprayed Al2O3–Cr2O3 composite coatings under silt slurry conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The requisite HVOF composite coatings has been deposited on the stainless steel substrate (SS-304). The slurry erosion pot tester of make Ducom was used for conducting the silt slurry erosion tests on the required substrates. The comprehensive experiments were conducted at different particle size of silt in the range 212–250, 150–212, 53–106 µm, and the concentration of the silt ranged from 10%–40% by weight. The rotational speed of the pot tester has been varied between 500 and 1,500 revolutions per minute, and the test duration has been kept to 4 h.

Findings

The erosion wear resistance of the uncoated SS-304 has been greatly enhanced by the application of HVOF-sprayed Al2O3–Cr2O3 composite coatings. The addition of CeO2 has a significant impact in reducing the erosive wear caused by silt slurry. The composite coating powder composition of 65%Cr2O3 + 34.5%Al2O3 + 0.5%CeO2 has shown the highest erosion resistance.

Practical implications

The developed coatings have the potential to be used for hydro turbines as subjected to silt slurry conditions.

Originality/value

The erosion wear experiments are conducted comprehensively for coated and uncoated samples and the scanning electron micrographs supports the findings.

Abstract

Purpose

This study/paper aims to investigate the erosion wear performance of Ni-based coatings [Ni-Cr-O and NiCrBSiFe-WC(Co)] under sand-water slurry conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

A high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) process was used to deposit the Ni-based coatings [Ni-Cr-O and NiCrBSiFe-WC(Co)] on the surface of stainless steel (SS 316L) substrate. A Ducom TR-41 erosion tester was used to conduct the tribological experiments on bare/HVOF coated SS 316L. The erosion wear experiments were carried out for different time durations (1.30-3.00 h) at different impact angles (0-60°) by running the pot tester at different rotational speeds (600-1,500 rev/min). The solid concentration of sand slurry was taken in the range of 30-60 Wt.%. The surface roughness of Ni-based coated surfaces was also measured along the transverse length of the specimens.

Findings

Results show the arithmetic mean roughness (Ra) values of Ni-Cr-O and NiCrBSiFe-WC coated SS-316L were 7.04 and 6.67 µm, respectively. The erosion wear SS-316L was almost 3.5 ± 1.5 times greater than that of the NiCrBSiFe-WC coatings. NiBCrSi-WC(Co) sprayed SS-316L showed lower erosion wear than Ni-Cr-O sprayed SS-316L. Microscopically, the eroded Ni-Cr-O coating underwent plowing, microcutting and craters. Ni-Cr-O coating have shown the ductile nature of erosion wear mechanism. NiBCrSi-WC(Co) surface underwent craters, plowing, carbide/boride pullout, fractures and intact. Erosion wear mechanisms on the eroded surface of NiBCrSi-WC(Co) were neither purely ductile nor brittle.

Practical implications

It is a useful technique to estimate the erosion wear of hydraulic machinery coated with Ni-based coatings imposed under mining conditions.

Originality/value

The erosion wear performance of HVOF-sprayed Ni-Cr-O and NiCrBSiFe-WC(Co) powders was investigated through extensive experimentation, and the results are well supported by scanning electron micrographs and 3D topology.

This study aims to present an overview of leading research trends in the lean six sigma domain published in the International Journal of Lean Six Sigma (IJLSS) since its inception.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present an overview of leading research trends in the lean six sigma domain published in the International Journal of Lean Six Sigma (IJLSS) since its inception.

Design/methodology/approach

The study analyses articles published between 2010 and 2019 in IJLSS using the bibliometric technique. The results of data analysis identify the most prolific authors, their affiliation, citation trends and highly cited articles from the journal. Further, a graphical analysis involving bibliographic coupling and co-citation analysis of the corpus enriches the investigation.

Findings

The results of the bibliometric analysis suggest that the number of IJLSS’s publications and citations grew markedly over time (from 4 citations in 2010 to nearly 1,324 in 2019). The organizational diversity and collaboration among authors publishing in IJLSS are trending upwards. Case study and focus group are the two most common research designs in publications. In the study, three major themes emerged: implementation of lean on business, integration of lean and six sigma and the effects of lean six sigma on businesses.

Practical implications

The study finding informs and educates practitioners and scholars about various qualitative research tools, applications and methods of implementing lean six sigma tools in different industry sectors.

Originality/value

The study uses bibliometric analysis to propose a novel categorization of research published in IJLSS and to report on the utilization of various lean tools in the journal. The study provides guidance for new future research besides offering a thorough introspection of the lean and six sigma domains.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of attitude as a mediator in exploring the Halal cosmetics purchase intention of Indian Muslim women. Various drivers of electronic word of mouth (eWOM) (quality, quantity, consistency and quantity) have been tested as antecedents of purchase intention through the lenses of the elaboration likelihood model (ELM).

Design/methodology/approach

The positivist paradigm approach has been used to test the proposed mediation model using structural equation modelling. Responses of 313 Indian Muslim women who read reviews shared on various social media platforms before making any halal cosmetics purchase intention have been used for the final analysis. Mediation was tested using bootstrapping.

Findings

The findings of the study revealed that attitude towards halal cosmetics mediates the relationships of various drivers of eWOM with halal cosmetics purchase intention. However, it was observed that this mediation was partial in the context of eWOM quality, eWOM valence and eWOM consistency. Furthermore, for eWOM quantity, the mediation effect was full as the direct impact of eWOM quality on halal cosmetics purchase intention was not significant but its indirect impact on the latter via attitude was found to be significant.

Research limitations/implications

This study adds to the marketing communication literature, especially in the context of eWOM. The study also validates ELM theory in explaining the attitude that shapes the halal cosmetics purchase intention, thus the current study enriches the ELM literature.

Practical implications

The current study offers several implications for halal cosmetics marketers. It offers various suggestions to them on how to capitalize on eWOM as it influences Indian Muslim women’s purchasing intention for halal cosmetics by shaping their attitude towards such cosmetics favourably.

Originality/value

With reference to halal cosmetics, the current study offers a new perspective by examining the purchasing intention for such cosmetics based on various drivers of eWOM. The attitude towards halal cosmetics as a mediator has helped in better explaining the purchase intention for halal cosmetics.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of the internet as an educational tool and to explore what role it plays in the educational system.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was purely conducted on a sample of 120 users of Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) Library. The questionnaires consisted of 20 main questions with many of the main questions having a number of subquestions. The questionnaire contained five open‐ended questions.

Findings

This case study provides awareness of various internet tools and services used by the library staff and library users. The library will aware of new internet services and provide their users.

Originality/value

This is case study of Delhi College of Engineering (Central Library) and this study will also be useful and important to those users who are already studying in different institutions and colleges.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to analyze the slurry erosion failure of Ni-20Cr (Ni-Cr2O3), Ni-20Al (Ni-Al2O3) and Al-20Ti (Al2O3-TiO2) coatings deposited on SS316L by the high-velocity oxy-fuel process.

Design/methodology/approach

Slurry erosion experiments were conducted using a pot type erosion tester at different velocities 1.81, 2.71, 3.61 and 4.59 m/s for the time duration of 90-180 minutes. Fly ash and bottom ash were used as erodent media; the concentration of mass flux was taken as 30-60 wt. per cent. Artificial neural network (ANN) method was used to simulate the slurry erosion for thermally sprayed coatings.

Findings

Slurry erosion of coatings increases non-linearly with an increase in experimental durations, mass flux and velocity. Slurry erosion of Ni-20Cr and Ni-20Al layers was found to be maximum at 60° impingement angle, whereas 30° for SS316L and 45° for Al-20Ti coating. Slurry erosion performance of SS316L was improved by 2.56-3.19 times by depositing Ni-20Cr and Ni-20Al layers, whereas it improved 1.15-1.75 times by Al-20Ti coating. The slurry erosion SS316L was found almost 1.35 ± 1.28 times greater than that of the Ni-20Al coating, whereas it was to be 1.12 ± 1.36 times greater than Al-20Ti. Ni-20Al-coated SS316L showed a lower value of slurry erosion than Al-20Ti-coated SS316L.

Practical implications

Stainless Steel SS316L is widely used in hydraulic machinery (such as turbines, pumps, valves, fittings, etc.) of hydraulic and thermal power plants, chemical industry and marine industry. Therefore, the deposition of ductile and brittle coatings is a better option for their durable performance.

Originality/value

Erosion wear of Ni-20Cr, Ni-20Al and Al-20Ti coatings was successfully simulated by using an artificial neural network model by supplying experimental data as a target.

Abstract

Purpose

Peanut skins are an agro-waste product with no commercial value. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate peanut skin as a natural dyestuff and to determine if this natural dye could be used in the dyeing of some Egyptian cotton cultivars.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology consists of several steps; dye extraction procedure from peanut skin through aqueous extraction, then dyeing optimized using simultaneous mordanting using alum. Finally, dyed cotton has been subjected to different textile laboratory tests, for example, color measurements and mechanical properties. Color-fastness was determined on Egyptian cotton fabric. The peanut skin as a source of natural dye and the dyed cotton sample were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis.

Findings

It was found that the natural dye extracted from peanut skin has an affinity for cotton samples and showed high dyeability with a unique color shade, good color strength and very good fastness.

Originality/value

The novelty of this paper is the extraction of color from the peanut's outer skin which is discarded as waste such as agro-waste of the agricultural process which can be used as a natural dye in the textile industry and applied to dyeing some Egyptian cotton fibers from different genotypes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to evaluate food supply chain stakeholders’ intention to use Industry 5.0 (I5.0) drones for cleaner production in food supply chains.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used a quantitative research design and collected data using an online survey administered to a sample of 264 food supply chain stakeholders in Nigeria. The partial least square structural equation model was conducted to assess the research’s hypothesised relationships.

Findings

The authors provide empirical evidence to support the contributions of I5.0 drones for cleaner production. The findings showed that food supply chain stakeholders are more concerned with the use of I5.0 drones in specific operations, such as reducing plant diseases, which invariably enhances cleaner production. However, there is less inclination to drone adoption if the aim was pollution reduction, predicting seasonal output and addressing workers’ health and safety challenges. The findings outline the need for awareness to promote the use of drones for addressing workers’ hazard challenges and knowledge transfer on the potentials of I5.0 in emerging economies.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to address I5.0 drones’ adoption using a sustainability model. The authors contribute to existing literature by extending the sustainability model to identify the contributions of drone use in promoting cleaner production through addressing specific system operations. This study addresses the gap by augmenting a sustainability model, suggesting that technology adoption for sustainability is motivated by curbing challenges categorised as drivers and mediators.

Abstract

Purpose

Companies should enhance their market position and competitiveness by improving staff effectiveness, skills, resource commitment, and applying relevant managerial methods. This study aims to examine the impact of knowledge management (KM) and total quality management (TQM) on employee effectiveness (EE) and supply chain performance (SCP) in emerging economies.

Design/methodology/approach

The used methodology consists on conducting a survey within Tunisian companies, where the authors gathered 206 responses. Collected data was analyzed using statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) software, enabling the authors to establish a conceptual model. This model was further examined through structural equation modeling, using analysis of moment structures (AMOS) software for hypothesis validation. Additionally, the authors’ research aimed to enhance SCP and boost EE while minimizing costs through a nonlinear mathematical model and the quality function deployment method.

Findings

The results indicate that TQM and KM positively impact EE, and KM and EE positively impact SCP. However, the significance of employee performance on SCP varies depending on company location and industry sector studied.

Originality/value

This work emphasized the involvement of small- and medium-sized enterprise managers from emerging economies in the studied concepts and confirmed the effects of KM and TQM practices on EE and SCP.
