Global 2000: The World's Largest Media Companies Of 2014

This article is more than 9 years old.

Twenty-First Century Fox sits in third place, two spots behind first-placed Comcast  (No. 57 on Global 2000) in this year's list of the world's largest media companies. Our scoring methodology is  based on rankings from sales, profits, assets and market value.

Comcast, who also topped last year's list, started out in 1963 with 1,200 subscribers. Today, the company has 26.8 million cable customers and 21 million Internet customers. In late April, the cable giant reached an agreement with Charter Communications to divest 3.9 million customers following the close of the Comcast- Time Warner Cable merger.

At No. 2 (No. 100 on Global 2000) for the second year in a row is Walt Disney . The company, best known for its film studio, also owns ABC and cable networks such as the Disney Channel, A+E Network, Lifetime, and 14 theme parks.

Earlier this year, Disney agreed to acquire Maker Studios, the leading network of online video content on YouTube. The purchase will allow the company huge advantages in the fast-growing short-form online video industry.

Of the ten companies listed below, U.S.-based companies account for 90 percent of the list.
