Facebook and Google are two of the world's most dangerous monopolies. But Congress and the Biden administration can break their power -- and a growing chorus of bipartisan lawmakers are calling for just that. Congress has the ability, the responsibility, and increasingly, the appetite to break up these two corporate behemoths to achieve racial, gender and economic justice, but we must keep up the pressure on Congress and the Biden administration.
TELL CONGRESS: IT’S TIME TO BREAK UP FACEBOOK AND GOOGLE
PAID FOR BY FREEDOM FROM FACEBOOK
Most of us use Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Gmail, Google Search, Maps, and Youtube. They’re important ways for us to communicate and connect with each other.
But Facebook and Google have amassed scary amounts of power. Together, they make $270 billion a year by keeping us addicted to our screens -- supercharging clickbait, conspiracy theories, hateful and illegal content, and predatory scams. Their algorithms amplify everything from white supremacist groups, vaccine misinformation, armed militias, and Holocaust denialism to misogynistic harassment campaigns, climate change denial, and counterfeit opioids -- and even target children. These corporations track us everywhere we go -- online and in the real world -- and dominate the digital advertising market, harvesting billions of dollars that once sustained local and independent journalism.
As Facebook and Google drive democracies into crisis, these corporate giants are also running rampant over millions of hard-working small businesses that depend on them, entrepreneurs who strive to compete with them, and workers who seek to drive change from the inside. To maintain their power -- which disproportionately harms Black and brown communities -- they pour hundreds of millions of dollars into deceptive P.R. campaigns, lobbying, front groups, and academia, including nearly $30 million on federal lobbyists in the last year alone.
Elected officials and enforcers can make Facebook and Google safer for users, businesses, and democracy by breaking them up, regulating them, and holding them accountable for wrongdoing.
Together, we will make sure that they do.
