DEFENSE DEPARTMENT REPORT, TUESDAY, JUNE 16

WEINBERGER CHARGED IN IRAN-CONTRA MATTER Former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger was indicted June 16 for perjury and obstruction of the congressional probe into the Iran-contra matter.

Independent Counsel Lawrence Walsh obtained federal grand jury indictments against Weinberger on two counts of perjury and one count of obstruction in connection with his knowledge of U.S. arms sales to Iran and of Saudi Arabian assistance to the anti-Sandinista insurgents in Nicaragua.

Weinberger, who served as former President Reagan's defense secretary from 1981-87, was also accused of hiding personal notes on administration deliberations concerning the affair. The charges include allegations that he made the notes part of papers he contributed to the Library of Congress, which automatically sealed them for 50 years.

Weinberger held a press conference soon after the indictments were handed down. "At no time did I ever knowingly misrepresent the facts or deceive Congress or anyone else," he declared. He termed the indictments "unfair and unjust."
