Manila gov’t working on vertical housing projects for illegal settlers

Vertical housing projects are among the solutions that Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso is working on to address the problem with illegal settlers in the city, he said on Tuesday.

Moreno acknowledged that one of the biggest problems of Manila is the presence of informal settlers.

“We have to start addressing it. There’s a study making them live in the same place they are comfortable just like vertical housing,” he said in an interview on ANC.

According to him, they already acquired a 2,000-square meter-lot in Tondo where a 14-storey building will be constructed.

He added that the National Housing Authority (NHA) already approved the plan to construct buildings more than five-storeys high for illegal settlers.

“So we will build Tondominium 1 and Tondominium 2,” he said.

The Manila government borrowed P5 billion from the Development Bank of the Philippines and also some amount from the Land Bank of the Philippines for these projects.

“We are grateful that they understand. This money will be utilized for social amelioration program, housing, health care, parks, health centers and other things,” he said. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
