Foreign & Commonwealth Office Minister welcomes Commonwealth statement on Fiji

Hugo Swire welcomes Commonwealth Ministers' easing of Fiji’s suspension, clearing Fiji’s participation in Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

On Friday 14 March the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) reduced Fiji’s full suspension to a suspension from councils of the Commonwealth, permitting Fiji to join a number of Commonwealth activities, including the Commonwealth Games.

Foreign & Commonwealth Office Minister Hugo Swire said:

I welcome the decision by the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group to partially lift Fiji’s suspension from the Commonwealth. It is a positive step which recognises the progress made in Fiji as they prepare for elections, which we hope will be free and fair.

The UK is pleased that, as a result of this, Fijian athletes will now be able to participate in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer. The details of the arrangements for Fiji’s participation in the Games are now being worked on by the Commonwealth Games Federation and the Organising Committee.
