The 13th African Games in Accra has ended on a historical feat by Egypt winning a record-breaking of 102 gold medals to emerge as the top nation in the competition for the third time in a row and the fourth time in the last five editions of the continental Games.

The Accra 2023 African Games in Ghana came to a successful close on Saturday. Egypt were the biggest winners with 191 medals, 102 of them gold, but Ghana's performance in the team sports was also very impressive.

Egypt's dominance at the 2023 African Games was also reflected in some of the combat sports, in an important part of its record breaking 100 gold medals in the whole biggest continental sporting event.

Egypt has been the dominant force in the African Games throughout the history of the competition. In this year’s event, hosted in Ghana, could reach a historic achievement by getting 100 gold medals in just one Games.

The Legon Sports Stadium, an 11,000-seater facility built for the Games, hosted the first three finals, with the East African country winning four medals, including two golds.

The African Games Accra 2023 beach volleyball champions are Egypt and Morocco. Egypt retained their women's title from the previous edition in Rabat in 2019. Morocco upgraded their silver medal to gold to become the men's champions.

In a landmark development for the sport, Ghana has proudly unveiled the Rugby Stadium for the 2023 African Games, which are being held in Ghana until 23 March. Located at the University of Ghana, the Rugby Stadium promises to be a cornerstone for hosting international rugby competitions.

Egypt is the clear medal leader after eight days of competition. The country has won a total of 144 medals (83 gold, 33 silver and 28 bronze) as of Saturday 16 March. Nigeria is in second place with 68 medals: 25 gold, 18 silver and 25 bronze. More than 5,000 athletes from 51 countries are competing for medals and records in 30 sports at this year's event.

The 13th edition of the African Games will end next Sunday, 23 March, with an absolute domination by Egyptian athletes, who top the medals table with 76 gold medals.

Cycling saw three days of competition with medals awarded for both men and women. South Africa and Eritrea have emerged as the most successful countries in the sport at the 13th African Games, with Mauritius and Algeria also winning gold.

Egypt dominated chess at the 13th African Games in Ghana. Bassem Amin led the way with four gold medals, two of them with Wafa Shahenda in the Blitz Mixed Team and Rapid Mixed Team events, taking the country's total gold medal tally to five out of six (Algeria's Lina Nassr won in the Blitz Women's Individual event).

Egyptian swimmers are leading the medals table, but South Africa is the country with the most medals after three days of competition at the 13th African Games in Accra. The four athletes with the most medals of the entire event are swimmers.
