A relatively new ground, the Ricoh Arena was built in 2005 for Championship outfit Coventry City, replacing the old Highfield road stadium.

The stadium was supposed to be ready by 2001, but in the event the final demolition work on Coventry's old home only finished in 2000.

It was also intended to hold 45,000 supporters and have a retractable roof; neither of which came to fruition, in part thanks to the club's relegation from the Premier League and England's failed bid to stage the World Cup (the 2006 one), which meant the stadium would not be used for that event.

The City of Coventry Stadium became the first ground in the United Kingdom to be entirely cash free in 2008 when it brought in a smart card payment system to ensure fans queuing for half time refreshments would not miss the start of the second half of games due to long waiting times.

The stadium has since accepted some use of cash at bars.

Like the North Greenwich Arena, the ground is being renamed for the summer of 2012 as Ricoh, the stadium's Japanese sponsor who it is named after, is not an Olympic partner.

Since its opening the stadium has held rugby games and pop concerts, as well as the 2011 Women's FA Cup final. It will be one of the venues for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

During the Olympics, the City of Coventry stadium will host 12 football matches in total, including the bronze medal match of the women's football tournament as well as one women's quarter final.
