Founded in 1876, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is unique among American museums for its integrated presentation of a full range of fine and applied arts from Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Spanning more than 2,000 years and including some 240,000 objects, the collections include masterpieces of painting, sculpture, prints, drawings, photographs, costume, textiles, and decorative arts as well as entire furnished interiors and architectural settings from around the world. The Museum maintains a lively schedule of exhibitions both drawn from the collections and organized around local, national, and international loans. Each year, the Museum's Publishing department develops, produces, and publishes eight to ten books, including in-depth collection and exhibition catalogues, popular books and handbooks, and online scholarly publications.
