Yad Ben-Zvi is a research, cultural and educational institution that operates under the Yad Ben Zvi Law, 5729-1969.According to this law, the three main functions of the institution are: Research the history of the Land of Israel and impart it to the general public, the study of Jerusalem and the establishment of the Jewish people's connection to it, and exploring Jewish Communities in the East. In the Rehavia neighborhood of Jerusalem, there are research institutes, a library and a publishing house, where dozens of books are published each year, as well as the periodical "Kadhedra", "Times" and "At-Mol". Alongside them is the Center for Land of Israel Studies, which holds dozens of courses and conferences for adults throughout the country, and the Jerusalem School of Studies, which conducts guided tours for youth groups and immigrants.

על פי חוק זה שלושת תפקידיו העיקריים של המוסד הינם:
חקר תולדות ארץ ישראל והנחלתם לציבור הרחב
חקר ירושלים והנחלת זיקת עם ישראל אליה
חקר קהילות ישראל במזרח
בבית הנשיא בן-צבי, בשכונת רחביה בירושלים, נמצאים מכוני המחקר, ספרייה ובית הוצאת ספרים, שבה רואים אור עשרות ספרים בשנה, וכן כתבי העת: "קתדרה", "פעמים" ו"עת-מול". לצידם פועלים המרכז ללימודי ארץ ישראל המקיים עשרות קורסים וכנסים למבוגרים ברחבי הארץ, ובית הספר ללימודי ירושלים, העורך סיורים מודרכים לקבוצות נוער ולעולים
