Half of the energy produced in Madeira is from renewable sources

 As of next year, half of Madeira’s energy will come from renewable sources. 

The dam of Pico da Urze, in Paul da Serra, is completed in August, at a cost of 70.6 million euros, it will allow next year 50% of the Region’s energy to be produced through renewable energy.

    Tell me, please, what is the power plants in Madeira and what kind of? I have always thought that there are only wind farms there and most of electricity is transposed by submarine cables.

    1. Right now the electricity supply still depends hugely on the one and only local power plant that need fossil fuels to produce energy. Those fuels are brought to the island by ships. There are only a couple of windmills on the island, but way too little to supply the total electricity demand.

      1. Hi Stephen. The wind production can reach 30% of the Island. Wind, water and sun,together can reach 50% of the demand of the Island nowadays, in good days. In Madeiraisland exists 2 fossil fuel ppwer plants. One small one in Caniçal, a big one in Câmara de Lobos… With this dam, we will be capable of 50% from renewable energy even in bad days (wind, sun, water – Madeira Island is famous for “micro-climas”). For Wind turbine generators we have almost 60 that can produce 40Mw in an Island that needs daily 130Mw. Also for waste energy production in Meia Serra we have 5% in for good days.Research in eem.pt

      1. The waste to energy process is only good for less than 10% of the electricity used. Still it’s a better use as just dumping that rubbish somewhere on the island.

    3. In that case, if there is only one power plant, are not the electricity prices high? Monopoly usually means high prices for the client. In Madeira, how much is the average monthly energy cost paid for?
